I/O Error Using Verbatim 16x

My burner has a max speed of 8x, and I picked up some Verbatim 16x's because I figured it wouldn't be a big deal. With the old Verbatim 8x's, I could burn +R and -R discs without ever making a coaster. I went through literally hundreds without a problem. Now, I picked up 100 of these 16x's and they are getting an I/O error in DVD Decrypter every other time I burn a disc. It will mess a disc up, and then I will change the disc, and it will work. It's weird, and it is a royal pain.
Has anyone else ever seen this? I wonder if it could be from using a media that is "too fast" for the drive.

@newgene2,
The 1st thing I would do in your case is make sure your burner's firmware is up to date, if not, update it. Secondly, if it is an 8x burner, it may be a good idea to think about buying a new burner soon. 16x burners have been out a good while. They are pretty inexpensive too. For about 40 bucks or less you can get a nice one.
But updating your firmware will cost nothing and should correct your issue. Also try burning at 4x. Generally burning should be done at 1/2 the media's rated speed for your burner, or 4x.

Thanks for the reply. The firmware is up to date when I checked, and it is a laptop burner. I wonder how much it would cost for new burner for an HP Pavilion zv6000?
I can imagine there would be a problem with burning at the max of the burner speed, and there could be a problem with an old version of firmware. However, it is still baffling me that I would only get the problem when I go from Verbatim 8x to Verbatim 16x. I wish I had an answer for that.

The answer is usually firmware. I would suggest you burn at 4x with your setup. But make Sure that your firmware is current. Also, did you get Verbatim 16x DVD+R or DVD-R?

if that is the case, your "answer" definitely is the firmware~ :)
if these problems you are experiencing only occur when changing the Verbatim media from the 8x rated to the 16x rated speed, regardless of format, it's a sure sign that since you have an older drive, the firmware is NOT up to date to handle the newer write strategies/MID coding~ (your drive's firmware obviously can recognize and burn properly the 8x DVD-R format MCC02RG20 and the 8x DVD+R MCC003 coded discs, but has trouble with the 16x DVD-R MCC03RG20 and 16x DVD+R MCC004 coded ones) :)
the lowest cost "solution" for you at this point is to specifically FIND the 8x rated media (Verbatim is good and i would recommend you getting some Taiyo Yuden 8x media in either format too for your current drive/firmware) :)
as unfortunate as it might be that your drive can't handle the newer/faster media, unless your budget allows you to purchase a new burner (one that's more recent w/ supported updated firmware) then i'm afraid you will have to be more specific in your media choices to continue to use your current burner~ :)
if i may ask, what make/model is ur dvd-burner? what firmware you currently using? when was the latest firmware released for your specific drive? (if the date of ur firmware is like 2004 or earlier, then you will definitely not be able to burn onto 16x rated media) :)

Thanks for the info. I'm glad I have an answer that makes sense. I forget what type of drive and firmware I have, but as of the last time I checked, it was up to data. However, I need to check again. At least now I know that if I can't find updated firmware, I need to cutback to 8x media. I will just keep slugging away at the 16x's until they are gone. It's about 1/2 of each disk that messes up. I still have some 8x's that I can use until I figure out if I can update the firmware on the drive.
Thanks

no problem~ and ur welcome~ :) with older dvd burners, the firmware is usually the culprit in nailing the errors, especially with the newer 16x rated media~ :)
the problem with "out of date" firmware is that the MID codings for the newer media along with the write strategies are not programmed into the older firmware~ more often than not, many manufacturers/companys that produce dvd burners no longer support or update firmwares on their old drives, it's much more profitable for them to produce NEW drives and sell those to the public to keep up with technology~ that's just business~
good luck

Yeah, I'm afraid that is the case here. I just checked, but the latest version of firmware for my Pioneer DVR-K15 is 1.11, and I am already running that. So, I guess they have no intentions of updating it.
