Half of my backups are single layer memorex DVD+R. Is it worth it to make new backups using single layer verbatim DVD+R. If so, can I backup up the old memorex backup DVD's (using the new verbatims) or should I use the original DVD. In some cases I don't have the original DVD and the backup DVD is all I got. Will that deminish the quality of the new verbatim backups of the old memorex backups, keeping in mind that I might not have the original DVD to backup.
So in short, should I make the switch and will a backup of a backup DVD be just as good as a backup of the original DVD?

First, I would check the identity of the true manufacturer of your Memorex. My 4X DVD+R Memorex have a code of RicohJpnR01, the very same code as my 4X Made in Japan Maxells, and the 4X TDK I have. (As soon as I found CMCMag Memorex/TDK, I took them back and stopped buying them, so don't have any)

Most members use Dvd Identifier:

All my Ricohs are still fine. I can tell you there is a difference in the dye. You will notice that Verbatims have a nice silvery blueish tinge to them. The Ricohs have the same color, while the CMCMags have a darker reddish purple tinge.

The problems that I had with the few Memorex CMCMags that I used showed up immediately. Others have reported a degradation after a short time. The choice to redo is yours and if you will feel better knowing you have used good media. If these are CMCMags, I would suggest you redo from the originals that you do have. Remember to burn at half the rated speed of your Verbatims.
