Looks like I am finally going to have enough money for a new 'puter. Here are couple of builds I'm considering. Any input is welcome.

Here are the guidelines I used for these two builds.
1. Descent gaming performance (not an enthusiastic rig)
2. Silent machine (compared to my current noise maker, silent enough not to disturb wathcing TV while sitting next to the machine)
3. Upgradeability (DDR2, Kentsfield, better graphics card (DX10 after they start to make less PSU demanding GPU, hopefully...))
4. SLI not required
5.No Overclocking needed

Problems for me:
1. I got no idea about MoBos (no overclocking needed)
2. I'm considering the 7900GS for GPU instead of 7600GT, would that be a good idea?
3. PSU: does it have enough juice?

Build #1:
CPU: Intel E6300 202,9
GPU: Asus EN7600GT Silent/2DHT/256M NVIDIA 192,9
MoBo: ???
RAM: 2 x Kingston 512MB 533MHz KVR533D2E4/512I 149,8
Case: Antec Performance One P150 139,9
PSU: Neo HE 430 EC (included with the case) 0
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB 84,9
DVD: Lite-On SHM-165H6S DVD+/-RW Dual 49,9
Total: 820,3?

Build #2:
CPU: Intel E6300 202,9
GPU: Asus EN7600GT Silent/2DHT/256M NVIDIA 192,9
MoBo: ???
RAM: 2 x Kingston 512MB 533MHz KVR533D2E4/512I 149,8
Case: Antec Sonata II - ATX-kotelo 112,9
PSU: SmartPower 2.0 450W ATX12V v2.01(with the case) 0
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB 84,9
DVD: Lite-On SHM-165H6S DVD+/-RW Dual 49,9
Total: 793,3?

Actually, what I heard about those next generation graphics cards (dx10) is that they will be really power hungry, however after first dx10 cards, they should be starting to reduce the powerneeds with following generation cards and I am planning to hang on to the card untill that time (holding my fingers crossed). So the card probably should handle games for a minimum of 1 year, probably closer to 2.

And about those parts you posted:

According to TomsHardware the best RAM match for Core2Duos is the 533MHz if the CPU isn't overclocked. I am not looking to get the every last ounce of power out by any cost, but to get reasonable perfomance with reasonable price.

I'll be sure to look into that case, PSU and MoBo. If I just can find a descent case without PSU then I'll probably buy atleast 500W PSU, but so far every case that looks good is either with crappy PSU or costs WAY too much.

About the power consumption:

PSU calculator here:
http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

It would seem that 430W PSU should be enough for the 7900GS with my setup, atleast the 450W PSU should be able to handle it.

Anyways, I've never build a system myself yet, and all my knowledge is based on what I've read so I might be totally wrong in this.

Sup with AMD Athlon cpus seeing as you want decent gaming performance? no build considering one of these? I used to be intel only kind of guy, but i now have an Athlon 64 3500+ which I bought about a year ago and I am well pleased with it. I also dont do the ovderclocking thing, maybe someone could give you some tips using 1 of these.

yeah newbie y amd? when intel has the advantage?

to Katzhuu im just saying that if ure gonna buy a 7900 then a 8800 = ure gonna spend over 1000 bucks on video only so maybe u could buy a midrange card now and a high end later but since its ure money u could buy a high end now and a dx10 high end later also about the ram that is true if ure running higher than 800mhz but with a 667mhz ure gonna b fine without overclocking

yeah newbie y amd?

what's up with the hate on amd member, A few month's from now you will eat those word's. Once quad core come's out.

Now would be the the best point to wait on building and wait for a few month's, If you must build, build cheap on the knowledge that new and far more advanced technology will be released soon.

That's true, but I'm probably gonna skip atleast the first generation dx10 cards, maybe even second and third generation too (they seem to be coming out pretty fast these days), so I'm hoping this card will carry me through a minimum of 1 year and probably closer to 2 years.

And to those AMD buffs here:

I am a current owner of an AMD processor. It has been good one, but at the moment Intel's Conroes just blow the AMD out of water. Also the preliminary review of Kensingtons (Intels quad core in case you didn't know) seemded pretty nice so I am putting my money on Intel this time. Sure AMD may come up with something in near future, but it almost never pays to wait because the next 'new innovation' is always waiting a couple of months away. My current rig is over 5 years old and it is time to get a new one as soon as I get the money together.
