I have been using som Fuji & Maxell DVD-R Discs that I purchased from a local Sam's Club. I downloaded and ran DVD Identifier and found that the Fuji discs were ProdiscFO1 & the Maxell DVD-R were CMC MAG. AE1. These are the inkjet printable type. I stayed away from Memorex because of the CMC MAG crap. Now it seems as if Maxell has joined the CMC MAG camp. Are my backups safe with Prodisc or, are they the same as CMC MAG's. Thanks

Fuji, Maxell, and Verbatim all have smart engineers. When all three choose to have CMC manufacture their discs they either know something or are suicidal. Prodisc is also a respected manufacturer of optical discs but their own MID codes are not as well supported as many others. As for Fuji discs, Fuji makes a very stable Oxonol dye that preliminary testing indicates is may more heat stable than azo-cyanine or cyanine dyes. This dye type requires a bit more laser power than the other dyes (sounds a bit like magnetic coercivity but it's a different model), and that is a problem at 16X where the power requirements are the greatest. Newer drives have stronger diodes (That's how the 18X drives are possible); so the concern is only a problem for the earliest 16X drives. In other words, the Fuji discs made by Prodisc (the "F" in the MID code stands for Fuji Oxonol) should be very good for long-term backup. Maxell should also be satisfactory if your drive is working well with them.

I do buy & use the Verbatum printable discs. I just bought the Fuji & Maxell because they were cheaper. I was curious to see how they would perform and only later, after purchasing and using them, did I discover that they were CMC Mag's. Tayo Yuden is my preferred blank DVD, with Verbatum being number 2 on my list. Now I guess I'll only backup stuff that I don't care to save for the long haul on the Fuji & Maxell. Thanks.
