Can anybody out there shed any light on my situation? My firmware drive is: HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B

I have it updated to the latest firmware of 033. I used to put my DVD is the DVD-ROM and it would recognize the blank media to write on. But, the DVD-ROm won't recognize any media.

Any suggestions on what I can do or do I have a real hardware problem? I'm really trial and error with all of this. Will appreciate your help.

Hi elijahjt,

Why do you want to use your ROM drive to recognize blank media? Are you trying to ID the code, because you can only do that with a RW (Read/write or commonly known as a burner) drive.

I have an LG 8163b, the model after yours, it will NOT recognize BLANK media neither does my Liteon Rom drive. They both are functioning. They will, however, recognize burnt media and my regular store bought dvds and Cds.

My LG 4163b which is a RW drive will recognize both blank and burnt media.

Punching "GDR8162B" into Yahoo reveals that an LG DVD-ROM. It is not a writer.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Hi guys! I apologize for not being clear. I'm not trying to read blank media on my DVD-ROM. I'm trying to look at or burn movies, which I used to be able to do. Before I could insert the DVD into the DVD-ROM and insert blank media into the CD/DVD-RW Drive and it would prompt me to auto burn. Now I have to do everything from my CD/DVD-RW Drive. My DVD-ROM will no longer reconize the DVD movies. It says, no disc inserted. Is there something I need to do to my firmware, other than the latest update of 033. I don't know what to do. All assistance will be greatly appreciated.

if you've tried reinstalling the drive, i'd say it's simply dying.

problem has now spread here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/404141

please keep the problem contained to one 'thread' instead of spreading the problem into multiple threads; at the very least t's like walking into half a conversation
