Only reason why I bought these is b/c i work for best buy, and they were cheap as hell (22.50 for a 100 spool) and ive only encountered maybe 3 out of 200 that have been bad out of the batch. for some reason every now and then i cannot backup a burned copy that is used with the Dynex media.

anyway, anyone else have a good reason as to why i should buy Sonys over these, or any other big name brand?

The "no-name" brands are often, but not always, B-grade product from a factory that suspects a problem in a batch or has found that some production does not meet specifications. Because of the way QC works (Quality Control is in-line processing; QA Quality Assurance test the finished product), the manufacturer knows the last time the line was producing good material. All material produced since the last good check up until the problem was identified is segregated. Much of it may be good, but it's too expensive to sort; so the entire lot is sold off to a lesser known brand or one that is "made up" just to get this product to market rather than thrown away. Prices are cheap, and the sorting is done by the consumer who is expected to find the bad ones and throw them away. The problem comes with marginal product--seems to work but fails in a few months. It's better to stick with recognized name brands unless you really want to gamble.

Right there explains some of the problems with low quality media. Too many read errors= CRC errors.

Then you'll have to slow down the burn speed, reduce backup target size to around 4300 mbs,and hope the cheap dye doesn't break down.

22.5 cents each?

That is not very cheap. I've seen cmags sell for under 15 cents each.Same with Playo's. Office Depot media uses a lot of ritek and Ricohjpn media and goes for 20 cents apiece when on sale.

Unless you get the sony tys, then get Verbatim. These will run 30 cents each max, during Office max or Best Buy's sales.

Anyone know what chemical company makes Dynex?

Not that I'd buy any.

I stick with Verbs or TY.

Always looking for the good stuff.

Ritek manufactures the Dynex in the faster speeds (ie. 8x + 16x) with either Ritek or Ricohjpn MID coding~ :)

in the slower speeds, could be a toss up between CMC MAG, AML, among others...

Interesting. I've been wanting to give Ricohjpn a shot. Just too bad that there is no definitive way to makle sure I get them instead of Ritek (not that I experience problems with Ritek, but I've used them, been there, done that. Wanna try something new.)

I should also mention I too work for Best Buy and I'm almost positive I've checked some 8X dynex and they coded out CMC. I could be wrong though.
