best computer for editing??

I go to a a school that uses spefic laptops(you can't buy your own and use it in school) freshman year,my laptop was amazing and I never complained till late-sophmore year. Now during my Jr. year i've gotten into video editing and PC gaming but my laptop can't keep up. My laptop is slow when im using premiere and like-wise during Halo. Basically my laptop sucks and im looking for a laptop less than $1,000 that can run adobe premiere & PC games smoothly. Alienware specializes in that category but my friends told me that ALienware isn't that great of a laptop. How is Alienware? and what laptop other than Alienware is perfect for video editing and PC gaming? In editing more the preview video is stuttering and slow is there any way to fix that?

do u really need a laptop? a desktop would do the job great and u could use it for gaming it would be a very powerful desktop with 1000usd but 1000usd on a laptop isnt very good for gaming or encoding so think about the idea of a desktop

ok thankx for your reply. I do have a desktop in my room which runs Premiere 1.5 smoothly but the system is strangley not compatible with the new version 2.0. I wanted to get a laptop because of the freedom aspect of it but i guess i'll save up a bit more because technology is always changing. On my desktop computer I have a AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3000+, 2.17HGz, 488 MB of RAM, and about 120 GBs of space. All these specs sound better than my laptop(can run adobe 2.0) but why can't i install premiere 2.0? Do i have to upgrade my processor? which processor is best?

probably not enough ram. 488 has some taken off for your video card or something; it's really 512 mb, which is bare minimum these days. another 512 and you'll be respectable again. what message do you get when you try to run adobe 2.0?

A laptop for editing shouldn't be anything but a G4 Powerbook. But, it isn't at all good for gaming.

Video editing and gaming ask very different hardware needs. The only way of meeting both desires is to get a high performance desktop. In any case, there is no laptop under $1000 that can run the top games smoothly. That's not true of desktops though. X1900 All in wonder, Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard disk, job done.

well it seems i'll stick to my desktop in my room and save up for the high performance laptop. To Auslander, It says that 2.0 can only run on a SSE2 instruction set but i'd be fine if the 1.5 version could work with .avi(DivX or XviD). Whenever I import an AVI into premiere, the video in the preview is black and scrambled(cant see a thing) but on my laptop(which is very slow) the same .avi is perfect. My desktop plays .avi's in windows media so why doesn't it work in premiere 1.5? Do I need a special codec? My computers suck, my desktop has compatiblity issues while my laptop has speed issues(during the preview it is very sloppy and slow), when i get the money im going buy the best computer on the market but for now please help.

as long as you have Quicktime 6.5 installed and all your hardware is listed as compatible here, then i'd say the issue is ram-related and you simply need more of it.

Sorry to butt in here, but your desktop is NOT compatible with adobe premier 2. You have an SSE processor but it requires SSE2 for AMD based systems. You'll need to upgrade to an SSE2 compatible processor, which in socket A (the type of proc you have) is only available in the form of a Sempron. So that being said you'll lose some upper end preformance. This processor would do the trick for you though http://www.epinions.com/pr-AMD_Sempron_3...lay_~full_specs

A socket A sempron? That's also going to exhibit some "performance issues" LOL. My friend's personal experience matches a Sempron 3000+ to an Athlon XP 2400+. Not great.

apparently, it would be a processor upgrade. for overall performance, though, you really need a ram upgrade as well.
