At 4 hours per disc, you are really pushing the limits... That is a bitrate of about 2300kbps.

I would strongly recommend that you re-encode the DVDs to mpeg4. You can drop each DVD down to about 1.1GB so you can fit 4 on a DVD5. If discs are really a concern, you can drop the bitrate to about 750kbps and fit all 6 discs on one DVD5.

You can use Nero Recode for this. Use a lower resolution and hope that picture quality will be good enough. At that low bitrate, you are even asking a lot from mpeg4. However, the movies will not work on a DVD player. You would be able to play them on a PC though.

If you really want to fit 4 episodes per disc and retain DVD compatibility, first, cut the credits from the end of each episode. Use VobBlanker's prev/cut option. Leave maybe 1 second of credits.

Now, for the video, since there are no credits,, it is safe to use 2-pass Variable bitrate encoding. You can use TMPGEnc (slow, but good and comes with a 15 day demo I think). Or, you can look for free encoders. If you own Mainconcept Encoder, use that because it is fast and high quality.

Do 1 disc/episode at a time. It takes up lots of space when you re-encode movies. You will have to re-rip the DVDs. I suggest you use Smart Ripper since the DVDs are on your HDD. You can open the DVD folder (choose the VIDEO_TS folder) and rip from the HDD> This means you can rip the whole disc in about 3 minutes.

Use the movie mode. Choose to Demux the streams and make sure both audio and video are demuxed. You can then open the .m2v with your encoder. Encode to elementary streams and use this formula for deciding what bitrate to use:

br = [(4505 / 7.5t) * 1000] - 192

br = bitrate
t = time to put on a disc

Example:
If you want 6 episodes per disc and after removing credits they are 55 minutes long, you will use the formula like so:

br = [(4505 / 7.5*(55*6)) * 1000] - 192
br = [(4505 / (7.5*330)) * 1000] - 192
br = [(4505 / 2475) * 1000] - 192
br = [1.820 * 1000] - 192
br = 1820 - 192
br = 1628

1628kbps is a very low bitrate, so I would not recommend using this, but it is up to you. You can always test encode a small portion of the episode to see how it looks. Use 1-pass VBR for testing and 2-pass for the full encode.

Remember, since there are 6 episodes per disc, this means you have a total of 12. This limits your options for how many to put on a disc. Your options are 6 per disc, 4 per disc, 3 per disc and 2 per disc.

For 2 per disc, use DVD Rebuilder. This is because you will want to retain the the disc structure. For anything else, use the standalone encoders.

Next, make sure that the audio is 2 channels at 192kbps. If not, re-encode the audio. You can use Besweet for this. Just open the AC3 and save as an AC3 at 192kbps. You will need the AC3 plugin for this though (something like ac3enc.dll).

After you are finished with all the encoding, you will need to author a new DVD. If you do not have an authoring program, use DVDLab Pro. It comes with a 30 day trial. It lets you create menus rather easily, so it is a very nice program.

You can use 1 VTS for all the episodes, but I recommend using 1 VTS per episode. This will reduce playback problems, however, it will cause small pauses in between episodes.

Hi JaguarGod,
How would I go about putting 2 hrs 40 mins of a VHS video tape onto DVD. I know I can just use a stand alone DVD recorder but would I get better quality if I put on PC and did some work on video there?

If so how? I know how to capture video to PC. I did this and ended up with 38Gigs AVI. I compressed with VirtualDub to 17gigs.

What else would you recomend?

Take the original 38GB if you still have it and run it through an mpeg2 endcoder. You do not need to compress the original AVI to another AVI. MPEG-2 is going to compress it regardless of size to the correct amount.

for 2 hours and 40 minutes you are looking at about 3560kbps video bitrate + 192kbps audio.

highly recommmend, that you cut out any credits, especially thehending credits. You can split the AVI with virtual dub. Make sure you direct stream copy and have enough space for the files. You can leave a couple of seconds of credits just so the movie does not end all of a sudden, but that is up to you.

Now, depending on how long those credits are, you can raise the bitrate quite a bit on the video. An 8 minute credit roll taken out would raise bitrate about 200kbps to about 3760kbps.

Is the above only relevant if I have credits.....I don't have any credits.

Can you recommend a good Mpeg2 encoder.

What do I end up with when the encoder is finished......a Mpeg2 file?? Do I then burn this to DVD?

Thanks very much.

I have never used DVD Santa, but I think it is a 1-click DVD Conversion/authoring tool. Probably something like NeroVision. I am not sure if the result DVD will be of good quality, but that depends on the settings available. If you can use 2-pass VBR encoding then it should be good enough.

The Virtual Dub step is only if you have credits, therefore, you DO NOT need to do it.

As for mpeg2 encoders, there are commercial ones that are good like; TMPGEnc, ProCoder, Mainconcept, CCE Basic, etc... There are also good free ones, but I am not sure of the names. I think HCEnc, FreeEnc, Quenc???

I think some free encoders can be found in avi2dvd which also creates stereo AC3 files. Also, you can get a free trial of TMPGEnc. I think the trial is 15 days, but it could be 30.

You should first try DVD Santa and see the quality. If it is acceptible, you can use that (I am assuming you already own DVD Santa though).

Well, do you want to keep both menus??

While possible to do it with DVD Shrink, I like to use PGCEdit. Open PGCEdit.

Now, go to "File=>New DVD"

Then "File=>Import VTST". Do this twice. The first time, import the main movie from the first DVD and the second time the main movie from the second DVD. If you want all the extas that's possible, but strongly discouraged sine you are already putting so much on the DVD.

Now, you will need to import the menus.

Right click Title 1 (the first DVD you imported). Now, select "import Menu". Find the menu for that movie.

Now, right click on Title 2 and repeat, this time importing the menu from the second movie.

All you need now is a "Movie Selection" menu. I can make one of those for you.

First, I would want to know if you are doing this. Second, you should run the menus through MenuShrink. This way you can send me the small DVD Menus and I can actually edit the DVD for you so that everything will work nicely and there will be no broken links and such.

This is different from doing an episode DVD since you will want each title to be in a differnt VTS. The scene selection menu works best in the VMG, however, it is possible to have it in a VTS. You can even have one of the "Special features" buttons take you to the second movie.

I would send you a completed menu though, so you do not have to worry about anything except testing the DVD to make sure it acts how you would like it to. This can be done with a software DVD player (PowerDVD, WinDVD, etc...) or Media Player Classic.
