Hi, I'm new here so please be nice. Anyway, I cannot seem to update my firmware for my drive, which my computer tells me is a LITE-ON SOHW-1633S, but when I try to upgrade the firmware, it tells me that it can't find a compatable device, even though it then lists the device right afterwards, but it says that the firmware version is "BGS"-something, as opposed to "BSO"- something, and I'm not sure why. Also, i can't seem to booktype either, although I'm pretty sure the drive should support it. Thanks in advance for any help.

i had this problem on a couple Lite-on 1693s's. Only way i solved it was to move burners to another PC, was then able to update firmware successfully, then moved burners back to original PC. it seems to be quite a common problem with Lite-on burners

Did you purchase and install the drive yourself or is it oem and came with your pc? Reason I ask is because it might be using f/w provided by the make of your pc in which case you need to look for a f/w update on the website of your pc manufacturer or flash it with patched f/w. Tell me exactly what the f/w is now. Should be 4 digits.

sorry to sound stupid, but what is the f/w? As to how I got the drive, well, the one that came with my computer, and emachines T6410, was faulty, so they sent me a replacement, although the replacement was different from the one I had, and is much better. Again, thanks for the help.

That f/w doesn't appear to be official lite-on f/w (must be oem from emachines). If it was me, I would flash it with a patched version of lite-on f/w. There are several patched f/w's you can choose from. Here they are:
Quote:
? BS0Y - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (for 1213S, 1613S, etc.)
or
Quote:
? CS0T - patched - crossflashing - fast burn FBD/FBDX (for 1633S, 1653S etc.)
? CS0T - patched - crossflashing, multi-colored LED (for 1213S, 1613S, 1633S, etc.)
Here's a link to the f/w http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html

The last two patched f/w's will actually upgrade your 1633 to a 1653. I upgraded my 1633 to a 1653 and it made a much better burner out of it.

The f/w's that say multi-color LED will turn the LED red when writing and green when reading and orange if the drive is dead (the old lite-on way).

If it's using your computer's brand of f/w for the burner, and you flash it to LiteOn f/w, you'll void your warranty.
If you're over your warranty period, go for it!

Flashing and voiding warranty is with HP computers. I'm guessing it's the same for all the name brands..........

I think I'm gonna flash my LiteOn 1633s, to the 1653 also, pretty soon, just to try something different. I'll see just what kind of difference it makes.......
Good luck!

..and if you still get the error "No matched drive detected!" when trying to flash the firmware, see if you can find someone who will let you put the burner in their PC and see if you can flash it from there. More info on the firmware problems and actually some info on the 1633S too, here -

Ok, thanks a lot for your information, it really helps. I'm not sure if my warranty is up yet or not, but I might flash it anyway. Thanks again.
