Get any final fantasy. It is the best of the best. You could always wait for october to get the new final fantasy. The only non rpg final fantasy is final fantasy 7 dierge of cerberus but it is good too!

Starting with final fantasy is a good idea, specially with FFVI, which IS the best final fantasy (not VII), I recommend dragon quest VIII too since is both, classic and modern.

And with dragon quest VIII you get a final fantasy demo in the game.

If you're into Lord of the Rings you can get Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. It didnt get the best reviews but it is fun and if you've got enough patience, some boss battles can get long (1 hour 45 minutes for the last boss), it can be an enjoyable game. It should be cheap by now if you can find it.
Just as a warning though, I am a big Lord of the Rings fanboy so I am slighty biased when it came to that game. ^^

Exactly muhhahahha

That game is great. In some way's it was challenging but easy to overcome. Played it on gameboy SP. Heard it was on ps1 never bothered playing it on that system.

It's still beter then most rpg's on the ps2 (excluding final fantasy series). It just dosent live up to what a true final fantasy is. But if you want to understand the story you would have to play final fantasy X-2.

really everyone has their own opinion and I see people clash heads about the final fantasy 7 and the final fantasy VI . this is what gets me thats is like compairin jordan to kobe it is hard .they both changed gamin alot in their on style and ways me personally I would say the final fantasy 7 is the best of all time do to the fact it made a impact that still goes on 7 or 8 years after it was made ,cameos in games (kingdom hearts) , a CG movie, spin off games dierge of cerberus , you name it . also a live concert of the music . I would say it bar none is the best , I didnt play any final fantasy's until I got a taste of 7 . I will admit that the other one planted the seed on the super nes, but 7 made it grow with water and hella sun

FFTactics is on Ps1 but it's not the same game that in GBA, it's still deeper and better overall.

FF X-2 is not as bad as some ppl say (specially final fantasy hardcores), but there are plenty rpgs better in Ps2...

FFVII is a very good rpg for sure, but is a very overstimated game too, there are better rpgs on Ps1 (Chrono cross, Grandia or Xenogears). FFVII was the first rpg for lots of gamers and thats the reason sme ppl always claim that is the best rpg of all times, and it's not (but I agree is hell of a game).

As with everyone else here, I too will agree that the Final Fantasy series are a really good place to enter the world of RPGs. They tend to perfectly combine the elements of storytelling and gameplay. But don't think that the Final Fantasy series is the be all and end all of RPGs.
If you're willing to travel back in time, I would highly recommend Xenogears for the original Playstation. In my opinion that is one of the best RPGs ever (aside from a comparatively weak Disc 2). Also the Breath of Fire series is pretty amazing in its own right (I broke into RPGs with Breath of Fire 2 for the SNES), but I wouldn't recommend picking up BoF 5: Dragon Quarter as your first ever RPG, it might be a little confusing. The Star Ocean games, too, are a pretty good place to start and with the multiple endings available they do have some replay value.
If I may make a few suggestions for you to keep in mind for when you've got a couple games under your belt, the Shin Megami Tensei series (Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, and Nocturne) is just outright amazing but will take some getting used to if your coming in from more traditional RPGs. As is Persona 2 for the original Playstation.

Yeah exactly what I think. although I am a hardcore fan I stil think it is good game.

All that talking about SNES make me think about one special game...chrono triger. Now that was a game...with mutiple ending or should I say with more that one way to beat the final boss since you say him aver the time...but the supose sequel...chrono cross that game I did not understain.Anyways for me the reason final fantasy VII is going to stay in my memory is because I played final fantasy3 on SNES and then the playstion came out with that game...the graphic where hot(I mean for that time) so imagine a freak loving rpg who jump^from the SNES to the playstion. Every thing was looking good compare to what I had played before and that why I thing a lot of peaple think that FF& is one of the best

All this talk about SNES games makes me think of a game called Earthbound. It's kinda crazy cuz the main character beats up dogs and trees and such with a baseball bat or a yo-yo and other characters use frying pans or toy guns but it is a lot of fun. For the SNES the graphics are amazing and the music is absolutely amazing also.
