DVD Writer can't see DVDs and CD-RWs

The DVD Writer in question is a Pioneer DVR-106D with a firmware version of 1.08.

One day, I was burning a DVD and there was an error. After that error, it won't read any DVD, blank or otherwise. And just recently, I found out that even CD-RWs don't work. Normal CDs and CD-Rs work fine. I have tried cleaning the lens, no effect. Any ideas?

Go to hardware manager and unistall your drive. The reboot your PC and when windows starts up again; XP will auto install your drive again.

Also check to see that your ASPI isn't corrupt with Nero Infotool:
