f you ever get a chance play Racing Lagoon & Einhander for Playstation. Two excellent non-rpgs by Square.
another good non rpg was Ehrgeiz, what an awesome fighter and had an rpg mode pretty innovative for the time it came like around 99?

Yeah I think we can end the Halo/FF comparions. One's a first person shooter, the other is an RPG. I am personally very biased against first person shooters, but the Halo games are undeniably excellent. They have incredible fan following, and Halo is one of the best FPS' ever. FFX is arguably the best RPG on the next Gen platforms. They're too different to really compare though. If you like FPS' then you like Halo, if you like RPG's then you like FFX better. It comes down to user preference. I prefer RPG's, you may prefer something else.

So what's the best RPG on the Next Gen platforms? I really like DQVIII and FFX. I think Nocturne might be up there when I play it through. Tales of Legendia comes out it two weeks or so. I can't wait for that one. What's your opinion?

DQVIII is good. But there are only 4 playable characters in the game. That is I dont like it.

I'm downloading Shin Megama Tensei: Lucfier's Call now. It's not out in the states yet apparently. That's okay, my Matrix Infinity will center it perfectly. :) I only played a little bit of Nocturne, but I could tell it was a winner. It had all the elements of a great RPG. I may play through it next. Digital Devil Saga looks quite good as well. Shadow Hearts also looks great. I played a little of WA4, just enough to make sure it worked okay. It seems alright, not great. Nocturne is probably what I'll play through next, but Tales of Legendia comes out in two weeks, so I may just wait on that. DQVIII is quite long, I've played it 80+ hours. My characters are way over leveled. Everything is pretty pathetic so far. I'm right at the Dark Ruins.

I'v done 110 hours just getting past arcadia and mine are at a measly level 30 oh well. Not sure how I got past the dark ruins. The story starts getting better after the dark ruins I can tell you that, though don't wanna spoil it! N e wayz that tales of legendia is meant to be pretty good too! (Have to get that when it comes out). I know this is off topic but have you played shadow of the colossus.

One word ......... BREATHTAKING #:o

ps isnt lucifers call a pal version of nocturne. Im from the UK and I was under the impression that they just changed the name.

Oh Maybe so. I didn't really look into it. Shadow of the Colussus seemed cool. I didn't actually fight any of the colossi. I know that's the whole point of the game. I'm at level 36 in DQVIII at the Dark Ruins. I poured all my ability points into single categories for each character, so I've got some really nice abilities unlocked. There didn't seem much point in spreading them out. I'm sure the enemies will get tougher. I've spent a ton of time leveling up and exploring, dinking around with the Alchemy Pot, and fiddling around with the Monster Arena. I haven't beaten Rank A yet, I beat all the others. Cheers!

Yeah you're right about Nocturne. It's just called Lucifer's Call in the U.K. Thanks for pointing that out, it saves me a download. FFXII info: http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/finalfantasy12/index.html?q=Final...

I'v yet to beat rank B, so is that weird Italian guy in spandex rank A?
LOL. Made the mistake of keeping all my skill points the same and realised the consequences at the end of Dark Ruins. I have to say I really didn't explore the world very much up until I got stuck. Can say I'v been to most places now with the exception of most of the Northern checkpoint.

Yeah the return played the Final Fantasy xii demo and I have to say its a big leap from modern day rpg so you might enjoy. :)

Oh yeah what do you reckon to Grandia 3 completed number 2 ages ago and have to say wasn't overly impressed however am I right in saying that there developers have put in a joint effort with square-enix this time round?

I played FF XII demo it was cool i guess. But i am kinda tired of the old school medevil theme that FF has been since FF 9. Plus im tired of the main character bein some blond abercrombie looking biatch. I thik a bad ass character like Auron should be the next main character for FF. Its time for the pretty boys to get lost and make the main character more bad ass like FF 7 and 8.

oh yea and ehrgeiz is a hella sick game i think im gonna try to find it somewhere on e bay or something. Havent played DQ8 that much since it keeps freezing on my HDD. The story is kinda slow and the music makes me sleepy but its a pretty good rpg.

Yeah there's definitely some weird shite going on with Morrie (Italian monster guy). He's alone all day with Monsters, alcohol, and a big empty arena, I'm sure nothing strange could go on there lol. The DQVIII world is huge, that's what has taken me so long to get to the Dark Ruins. I explored everything as soon as I got the ship. There are some really useful battle monsters in out of the way places. There's also some real good armor if you pay attention to the alchemy pot. It's key in getting some of the best item's in the game. Do you mean Grandia Xtreme? I don't know, I have a "backup" of it, but I haven't played it much. I beat Grandia 2 on DC. It was okay, the original Grandia is supposed to be a classic. I played a little bit of it, seemed pretty good. I have it backed up on CD, it's just hard to play PSX games when you've got PS2 games to play. I wasn't overly impressed with the FFXII Demo, but I didn't play both stages, just the desert one. Hopefully they went back to the drawing board after FFX-2. I played like 10 minutes of it and me and a friend were laughing almost to the point of tears about how terrible the first scene was. Yuna singing in a pop band, dress spheres, what a bunch of rubbish. I never played it again. I do have a "backup" of it, but it'll be a cold day in Hades before that graces my PS2. It's ashame that Dragon Quest V remake for the PS2 was canceled in the U.S. I played thru DQV on emulator, and it was quite good.

Yeah Final Fantasy x-ii has to be the most sorry excuse for a FF yet. I played through it hoping it would get better, (should of been called Barbies amazing adventure then we'd of known what we were wasting our time on) lol. As for Dragon Quest V gonna have to give it a go. Grandia 3 does look sweet as hell (don't think its the same as Grandia extreme, although could be wrong)
Check it out at:

Chriskahn2 don't oyu think it would make it better if the mane character was someone like say Sephiroph?

I couldn't see sephiroth as main character unless he had his own game to summon meteor and become a god blah blah the same story we are used to or maybe an unlockable part of game seph's mini rpg! :P

Hell that'd be a game and a half! Wasn't meaning Sephiroph specifically just meaning to get away from the Cbeebee's sh*te and put someone more badass in. :)

ps I don't think the stories continue to be the same take for instance

FFVII- about a man who thinks he knows everything about his past but yet is sourly mistaken in more ways than one ..............

FFVIII- about a man who wants to work his way up in Seed, but does't really realise what the purpose of being in is Seed until later in the game ............

FFIX- Okay could be defined as pretty much the same as vii ie not knowing about his past, traitors blah blah .. .. (this has to be my least favorite out of all of them) ..................

FFX- about a man who doesn't realise what his purpose is and just wants to return to his homeland Zanarkand .............

FFX-2- The biggest pile of dogsh*t to ever grace a PS2 and not worthy of being called 'Final Fantasy', (more like Final Dogpoo). However storyline (if any) is completely different to any other Final fantasy ........

FFXI- Never played this as my CPU does not support T&L graphics cards however would imagine that this would be different as usually is the case with online gaming.

FFXII- Have played the demo and can say it is completely different to all other FF realeases. (Had chance to dive into the story with review/previews but don't wanna spoil it for myself)

Add to all this every single of these titles has a different levelling up system, all different ability systems, overdrives/limit breaks difference, completely different bosses and extremely different and a wide array of sidequests, different main characters and different stories for every single main character not too mention very indepth detail of each and every character playable.

All these details alone puts it apart from many other sequels that DO just repeat everything.

(PS note that I have not gone into too much detail with the games stories as I do not wanna spoil it for anyone who hasn't and wanted to play any of these great titles) ;)

Ah, Final Fantasy, the Prelude will forever make me feel nostalgic, harking back to the simpler days of childhood. I've been playing the FF series for about 15 years now since 1991 when my bud bought me Final Fantasy (I) as a Birthday present. I've played every FF released on a console, not counting handhelds like GB(BAH!), and I have to say that I fear I'm drifting away from what was once my favorite video game series of all time.

Ever since FF7 I've been losing interest gradually in the series. FF8 was good, but it was an acquired taste. It actually took me 2 years after buying it to sit down and give it a chance. FF9 I was excited to hear that they were going back to the roots and giving us a more lighthearted Fantasy based game for the last of the PSX. What it ended up being seemed more like a mediocre rehash of the old with one of the worst androgynous villains ever...yes I'm looking at you Kuja.

Then PS2 came, and I awaited FFX, the big TEN mark. I figured this is going to be amazing, new and reinvented for the next gen world! Well when I actually got my hands on it, avoiding every preview leading up to it, so as not to spoil any magic...well...don't....don't even get me started with FFX, otherwise it'll make this long post longer. Let's just say I never completed it and promised to let it sit in my collection for who knows how many years until I feel I'm ready to accept it as a FF.

Well, that was a dark day for me and I started branching out, finding so many wonderful other RPG series, so many it's too many to list! (though I might one day make a topic of "TMACRPG Approved RPGs!")

Anyhoo, I played FFXI, I liked it but I've never been able to play a MMORPG for a long period of time and I always wished they named it FF:Online. So that ended after a few months of fun. And I waited once again for Square...now Square-Enix to save the FF franchise with FFXII. I hoped that Enix, my good old buddies (Dragon Warrior was my first RPG I ever played) would impart Square with some wisdom.

Well I fear the worst as I no longer avoid previews, and I see Vaan. Damn Vaan, I harbor the same feelings as someone in this thread. WHAT IN THE FOOK IS WITH THESE SYNONYM FOR CAT MAIN CHARACTERS. First Tidus and his yellow and blue lederhosen and sensible blonde surfer hair, now Vaan who looks strangely like Michael Jackson a bit with whatever the hell it is that he's wearing! I dunno, of course I'll give it a whirl as I have the Demo when I bough DQVIII, but meh I'm slightly scared. Hopefully Vaan won't sound as much like a girl as he looks.

Anyway, rant over. On other notes: Grandia I and II are great games, I can't wait for Grandia III.

Tokijin: Yes, other Tales fan right here. Just beat ToS about a month ago, and have played ToP and ToD.

Games I wish to be remade:
Xenogears, and NOT by Namco. Xenosaga is another touchy subject for me. It's a disgrace to even be considered the same universe as Xenogears.
FF6: Please! Kefka 4 ever!
CT: Yeah might as well while you're at it.
FF7: Don't know about a remake, I fear they'd ruin the greatness. Square has some weird views on art direction and voice talent now. But I'd like an anime series, and not some Last Order nonsense either.

Phew...well that was fun.

Tales of Symphonia. It's a great game, not exactly the most original story but the characters are neat and the Cel shading is done well. Plus the battle system is my favorite found in RPGs. (Next would be Grandia and then maybe Star Ocean)

The only problem might be is it's currently only out for Gamecube, with a Japan-only PS2 release.

Though Tales of Legendia is set for PS2 in about a month.

Yeh looking forward to that one, heard great things about it. Used to own a Gamecube but swapped it for a PS2 about a year ago and never looked back. Take it your into your old skool more then. I'd have to say the oldest rpg to date I'v played is Final Fantasy mystic quest. (Only 20 though!) N e wayz in ten years time I'll be claiming that Final Fantasy vii has been the best and most pepes would turn round and say Final fantasy what? lol So I understand your views with the current FF releases. As for FFxii have to say from what I'v seen and played I'm sourly dissapointed. (Not sure wether you can put sourly before dissapointed but nothing else came to mind). :)

Preach on brother TMACRPG. I agree that Xenosaga is a disgrace to Xenogears. It's not a bad game on it's own, but compared to Xenogears, well no dice. Most of the origianal Square staff that worked on Xenogears was picked up by Namco, and did the Xenosaga seres. Yuck, a six part series that's all FMV and no interaction, rubbish. It'll conclude on the PS7 in 2245 at this rate. I love the combat in the Tales Series. Check out the remake of TOP for PSX. It's in Japanese, but if you played the SNES version, 90% of the plot is the same. They just added a playable character and touched up the visuals. I have TOP Tales of Symphonia, Tales of Destiny, and will have Tales of Legendia as soon as it comes out. Man I'm excited, there's a lot of really good RPG's on the horizon. Grandia 3 looked great Paul, thanks for the link. Then Kingdom Hearts 2, FFXII, and Tales of Legendia. It could be a golden year for RPG's. Anyways I got class all day. Cheers!

Gotta say phantasy star universe looks pretty damn kool although still in development.

Downside is that its not out for about another six months. :(
