hi guys..or gals..I recently acquired 2 compaq m700 laptops on e-bay for two friends of mine..named bill. They both have the same cpu.. ram hd..and dvd-rom,a compaq sd-c2404.The only difference is one has winxp..the other win2000.The problem..when i insert a comercial cd or dvd in the one with win2000..it asks me if i want to format it. If i say yes..it replies it can't...if i say no..nothing happens.
I've tried deleting the drive in device manager and the driver in winnt/system 32/driver and re-booting...and swapping the dvd-rom drives..and even trying the winxp driver..to no avail. Device manager
states the drive is working properly. I thought i was reasonably computer literate..but i have to admit i'm stuck...any ideas ?
thnx..the bluer baron

Have you tried watching the commercial disk on the Win2k machine in spite of these errors? That'll help narrow things down.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers on the Win2k machine. Go into Device Manager, select the bad drive, and select Uninstall Driver. If there is another CD or DVD-ROM drive, also uninstall the drivers for those. Reboot and let device manager find it again; if necessary use the Add Hardware Wizard. Standard Windows device drivers are sufficient though you can use Windows Update or Windizupdate.com afterwards to be sure that there isn't an updated driver.
