No...
Unlike the PS2, Xbox relies on files installed on the hard drive for soft mods. No swap discs, slide cards, flip tops or memory card exploits necessary.

You don't need a mod chip...
Just soft mod the Xbox. No chip required. Just to clarify, soft mod is short for software modification. Swap Magic is considered to be a soft mod.

You'd be using AR to install the files necessary for the soft mod, but you won't actually be using AR to back up games.
Once you install the soft mod, games can be backed up via FTP or Quix in combination with a hacked dash and dvd2xbox.
And for most games, you'll be fine with the stock hard drive. For others, you'll have to do a split transfer, then combine everything into a single xiso and burn it.

Yes, you'd need one of those games.
They'll also have to be the original non Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits versions as well.
And yes, the stock hard drive is enough. Just don't expect to keep multiple or large games on the hard drive.
