DivX - What could the problem be?

A friend called me indicating he could not read a particular dvd-vr disc that contained a DivX movie that had been converted from PAL to NTSC. I had him send me the disc and I was able to read it on a standalone dvd player connected to my television. Then I popped the disc in my Dell. I have been able to play the audio and video from the movie just fine in VL media player and thought that I would give my friend a url for downloading it and he would be fine. I sent the disc back to him. My friend can watch commercially purchased video on his computer however, even with installed VL Media player when he places this particular dvd-vr disc in his computer it is not recognized. Even attempting to view files on the disc through windows explorer does not show files from this disc on this IBM Thinkpad. Is this a hardware problem with this particular dvd player or could it be software related? Thank you.
