Hi there,
I was interested to now where could I get the latest firmware for my Sony Vaios?s combo drive which is MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-846S?

At the moment it is set at Region 1 by default, how can I make it at 0 or No regions for all DVD movies to play since I travel a lot?

Hoping to hear from you smart people,

Regards!

Here's a site for your firmware,but I didn't see any region-free hack for it:

Without a hack, you'll probably have to use a program, but I know of no free ones.

There's a program called idledvd in the top of that sony firmware page, that says it'll set your drive to region free.

I use AnyDVD by slysoft. It's a background ripper and makes my drives region free.

Thanks for your responses.

Should I flash this drive with the firm ware.....the machine is a Sony Vaio VGC-LS1 & the drive is a combo?

Could you send me the link of the program idledvd, that says it shall set it on region free?

Hoping to hear from you,

Regards!

Well you could flash your drive with that firmware but it wouldn't make it region free merely update it. As for that program, I am not familiar with it so wouldn't know where to go with it sorry.

I don't know about idle dvd. It costs $40. Not too many recommendations on that program.

Anydvd will pull off the region code, has a free trial, and usually runs the same $40.They have special promos here at AD for a $5-$10 discount about once a month. You can give that free trial a shot.

It also pulls off the ever changing sony arrcos encryption, which gives most ripping programs fits. There's a free 21 day trial.

Updating firmware?

Not sure about externals. There's a risk when it comes to updating firmware. I leave mine alone, until I run into problems. If you run into media that your drive says no disc, then a firmware update-if available-may take care of it.
