I am sure you have all heard this before but i am new on these forums and cannot find what i am looking for. I have bought a 100 pack of taiyo yuden discs. well supposedly they are and i have tried nearly every one of them, and they wont even lead in. I actually burnt about 10 discs but they came up as disc error in my dvd player which usually plays anything i throw at it. I am using a LITE-ON SOHW 1633S burner which has previously written on really cheap unbranded discs but these supposedly top of the range discs just don't want to know. I have upgraded the firmware to 1633S.BSOY.patched-cf-mcled but this hasn't solved the problem. Am i doing something wrong or does my pc have a problem or has my DVD writer finally packed up. It is only a year old although i have burnt quite a few discs. Which discs record better with the LITE-ON SOHW-1633S burner. I would be very grateful for any help,i am tearing my hair out.

Did you buy the spindle with no center stacking ring? If so did the top of the stack have Japanese lettering? If it didn't have that then they are not Authentic Taiyo's. If you have Nero you can check your disc's info and if it codes out as TY-GG0000xx then they are Authentic. Another way to tell if they are Authentic is by looking on the underside of the disc and look for Lettering such as GG0000xx . There are also codes to look for underneath the disc but can't remember the other codes.Do a search for Taiyo Yuden codes and that should help you find out if they are real or fake.

Thanks for the help. Yes you are probably right. I have no code like the ones you gave me on these discs. Probably dodgy discs although they weren't cheap. Think i will send them back to where they came from and try some real taiyo yuden discs.
Thanks again

Where'd you get 'em? There are only a select few that sells authentic TYs. Supermediastore.com and newegg.com are two of the more popular ones.

When you say the Taiyo Yuden discs "don't play without skipping," does that mean on a different DVD player or on the Lite-on SOHW-1633S? My guess is that it the DVD player giving you a problem. The recording drive is a good one, and the media are also excellent; but with all the variables involved with optical playback, that may not mean that well recorded discs will still play.
If other discs play on your DVD player, stick with them. You can also try the TY recordings on a different DVD player, and they will probably work.

after looking at Grouty's drive on VideoHelp.com:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?...0&Search=Search
I noticed that his drive can't burn the 16x DVD-Rs! And Grouty PMed me on Sept. 28th asking me this question .... which I told him to post in the forum for all to see! In his PM he told me it was DVD-Rs and now looking at his drive it won't play the 16x -Rs. Could this be his problem? Also he mentions that he upgraded the firmware to BSOY which only goes to 12x -Rs! so maybe this is his problem with the TYs!

that's a very good point!. guess it depends exactly what TY those are and if they are indeed supported correctly in the firmware. was trying (unsuccessfully) to get a breakdown of the firmware contents off the cdfreaks website

Hi sorry i didn't reply i was away at the time. yeah hi thanks for all of the replies. By the way i am in the uk. i was just reading that my LITE-ON drive won't burn DVD-R at 16x. Does that mean that if i buy 16x discs i can't burn them at say 8x. I have also tried some genuine TAIYO YUDEN discs but i bought 16x discs again and although some of the discs will burn when i play them back in my DVD home cinema DVD player it states disc error. I take it i have got this all wrong and should be buying at the most 12x DVD-R discs. I was using really cheap unbranded silver topped 4x DVD-R discs and had relatively small problems. I would lose probably about 20 out of 100 but as they are cheap thats not so bad. I just wanted to try better discs that's all but if i want to do that it looks as though i would need to upgrade my Burner and home cinema player SHARP HOME CINEMA WITH DVD HT-CN400DV. Not really an option.

your media for the burner you have now won't burn correctly with the 16x media. Sometimes a firmware update will solve this problem but it's obvious that it didn't in your case. Stick with the 8x media and burn at 4x! you shouldn't have a problem then. Taiyo Yuden is one of the best quality media out there. You just have to buy the right one for your burner. Now.... the cheap stuff you've been buying and using...... yeah you might get 80 out of 100 (which you should get 100% burns not 80%..... that's a lousy record and time consuming).... if your satisfied with that kind of results..... fine..... but consider this: will your burns with lousy, crappy media stand the test of time!? My guess is that all your burns with the lousy media will become useless a year or so down the road when you try to play them again! That's what crappy media does.....buy the better stuff and get better results and keep them longer! Just make sure that they are 8x media!

most older members of Afterdawn know that 16x, DVD-R Taiyo Yuden disks are TYG03s, 8x DVD-R TYs code out to TYG02s.

Just want to say that TYG02 is still out there (and so is TYG01, 4x), but I'd still stock up. Some say TYG02 is TY's best -R. I think they're on sale now anyway at SMS.
-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

If it were me and this is what I did to my 1633, I crossflashed it with some patched firmware to a 1653. Made a much better drive out of it imo. Firmware covers more and recognizes more media. Here's a link to the f/w http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html and here's the f/w's you need. Do so at your own risk. The second one will convert led back to light-on way: red burn, green read.

The 4x DVD-R (valueline) at SMS can code out as TYG01 as well as TYG02 and TYG03. I guess it's a crap shoot what you really get though.
