Probably the media. Use Verbatim or otherwise something Made in Japan. You may have to try several types to find one that works. FWIW, you can have Nero transcode your AVI and burn it to a file on hard disk, and then play it just to be sure it transcoded correctly.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

FWIW = For What It's Worth

Ridata = garbage
Use either Verbatim, or anything that says Made in Japan (MIJ) on the label. Beware that most brand names besides Verbatim get their media from many difference sources, so they may use MIJ media with one batch and some other brand (location of manufacturer, and quality) in another.

I assumed you use Nero (e.g. Nero Vision) to convert your AVI to DVD format. If so, you can "burn" the project to hard disk. That's an option on the last (burn) screen. Try burning to hard disk and playing the movie with a media player like Windows Media Player or, better yet, Media Player Classic. If there are no stutters, you can eliminate a bad conversion or bad source, and pretty much confirm that it is a media-related problem.

I would have to agree with the others here. The type of problems you are receiving are common with vbad media. However, checking the converted output DVD on the HD prior to burning is an effective suggestion.

Skips/pauses/freezing and pixellation can be attributed to burning too fast, poor media or burner firmware that is not up to date. Use the Nero Info Tool and check the make and model of your burner and what version of firmware you have. Then either go to the manufacturers site and check for the current version, or go to the site below and look up your burner and the current version. If it is not up to date then you will need to flash your drive.

If firewire wasn't working you wouldn't be able to see the burner.

As far as burning goes, I stick to 4x speed for all single-layer, and 2.4x speed for DL burning. I wouldn't go above or below that no matter what speed ratings you have available.
