I've had this problem with a handful of games, and it's starting to get frustrating.

I bought my PS2 slim the day it came out, so it's the very first model. I'm not using a mod chip, but rather the "tool kit" that keeps the lid detector switches pressed down at all times. In addition, i'm using Swap Magic 3.3 to boot games.

I first came across this problem when i tried to play a backup of the JAP version of "Final Fantasy XII." The Triangle button (used to open the Party Menu) didn't appear to work. I thought that perhaps it was disabled during the opening scene, but after getting into the game a bit, i still wasn't having any luck, so i abandoned it.

Next came a backup of "The Godfather." The Triangle button worked just fine when i wanted to steal a car, but when the time came to access a Save Point, it wouldn't respond.

I encountered the problem again when playing a RETAIL COPY (an actual game disc, not a backup) of "Hitman: Blood Money."

And most recently, a backup of the English version of "Final Fantasy XII." The Select button (used to open the map) doesn't respond, and i can't use the Triangle button to open the Party Menu (but i CAN use it to access text logs during conversation with other characters).

I've played tons of other backups with no issues, but this latest problem with "FFXII" is driving me up the wall.

Has anyone else encountered a problem like this? Suggestions?

I've never had this problem with any of my games. I've played through the Japanese Version of FFXII with no problems. Maybe it's your controller that's the problem. I've heard bad things about the early PS2 slim's laser and that you need a laser fix, but I doubt that has anything to do with it.
