First, you must have it. usually they come in SupRip (SRT) or MicroDVD (.sub) format.
Second, the subtitle must ofteh be synchronized, since some 'trailers' at the beginning of the movie change the absolute position. SubTool if very nice for this.
Subtitles, if you want to be very precise, will also ave to be spell checked, because, for instance, the 'I' and the 'l' are very similar, and sometime the 'subtitle extractor' cannot recognize them , and so on...
Third: once you know the sub is prefectly synchronizrd (you can test it with BSPlayer, which loads AVI and subtitle separately to watch them together) tehre are two ways to apply:

A) DVD with a movie and which has selectable(s) subtitle(s), like in commercial DVDs

You must change the subtitle to the SUP format with some applications like SRT2SUP see the tutorials)
Finally authoring the M2V video + the (AC3, MP2) audio + the (SUP) subtitle, you create a DVD with selectable subtitles.

B) DVD with a movie which has permanently encoded subtitles n it
This is an alernative option and requires you to know well and to use VirtualDub.
1) once it is synchronized, transform the .SRT subtitle in the SubStation Alpha (.SSA) format (I use SRTtoSSA), and if the subtitle were in SUB format, I have it converted first, to SRT with SubTool.
2) load the SSA file with the VirtualDub filter 'subtitler' (external plugin hich must be put in the 'plugins' directory)
3) frameserve the 'subtitled' movie to yout movie encoder [you must have the VirtualDub's frameserver =clicking on 'install handler' on AuxSetup.exe installed).
4) encode normaly the movie, but use the 'movie.vdr' frameserving file instead of 'movie.avi'.

You will have to choose the font and the distance from the bottom border of the subtitle, which depends from the original AVI's screen Optional: first Resize the AVI up to DVD resolution (using the Resize Filter) and then choose Font = Arial 28 and Distance from bottom border = 30 pixels.

The final movie will have the subtitle permanently ancoded to the video.

Adding suibtutiles is the most dificult thing to do.
