Hi all,

I recently tried to back up scarface using CloneDVD and AnyDVD. The copy apparently burned fine and I can play it on my computer, but when I play it in my sony dvd player it says something like wrong country code. I have already checked the region code in AnyDVD and its set correctly.

Can anyone help? I've had the same problem with Boat Trip, but I never figured it out.

Thank you!!!!!

Try to rip it with the latest DVDFAB Decrypter, here http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm -- it's totally FREE, rips fast and simple.

Hi campilo
Would these maybe be in another format like PAL and your player only accepts NTSC?
You have AnyDVD set to make the disc region free - under feature removal is region code scripts is checked? (usually is by default).

Yeah, region code scripts is checked. It should be, right? I hadn't thought about it being PAL, I'll look into that. Also, I've been able to rip it to my hard drive (I'm pretty sure its worked) but when I try to burn the folder I get messages like 1 or 3 or 5 VOB invalid or something. I'm sure you're all annoyed, so I'll get the exact message codes. But that's the general problem.

Thanks

Yes that setting is right - was just checking to make sure :)

If you don't have this set you can set it and see what format the backup is in (or original). Have AnyDVD set to 'show information window for new media' in program settings. Will give you all the info on the disc.

Don't know where you got the dvd's that have this error when trying to play the backup. If you got them from a local store than PAL vs NTSC may not be the issue.

When you ripped them to your hard drive which program did you use - AnyDVD? And then CloneDVD to burn? Are you riping the original again or the backup copy?

Oh and no not annnoyed at all!

campilo,
I could not discern from your postings what region and country you live in. Do you live in Region 1, USA? On some DVD originals, the CloneDVD / AnyDVD combination will produce Region Code based errors if your DVD Drives have not actually been been set (by you) to Region 1, USA. Computer manufacturers do not set the region codes if they ship to many different countries.

So, I believe I know what your problem is. You never actually set your Ripper drive and Burner drive to the region you live in. I use Windows2000:SP4 but if you are on XP the following instructions must be similar.

This is done by going to My Computer, highlight your DVD drives(s)and right click on Properties, choose the Hardware tab, select and highlight (one at a time) each of your DVD drives, click on the properties button and then choose the Advanced Settings tab. Now select the country you live in. If you live in the USA, then Region 1 will appear in the Current Region display readout after clicking OK or Apply.

BUT ... here is the catch: You cannot do this with AnyDVD running (or any other decryption software running). And the drive must not have a disk in it.

Being an internationally popular software driver, one of AnyDVD's main purposes is to trick Windows into thinking that the DVD drive is set to a certain region code as a basis for your backup software (CloneDVD in your case) to be able to create a backup of your original disk that actually becomes a region-code-free backup (magic yah?). But (if your DVD drives have not been set to a Region), it backfires sometimes with certain DVD originals depending on how the region-based encryption is implemented.

So don't you be tricked by the drive's properties displaying the region code correctly while AnyDVD is active (or or still running in Windows Services).

And also, if in the past you think that you did originally set your drives region code but are not sure if AnyDVD was running at that time too, your drives region code may never have really been set.

Open AnyDVD settings, uncheck the "Startup Automatically with Windows" choice (or however the feature is titled). Close AnyDVD. Restart/reboot your computer. This removes AnyDVD from Windows Services. Double check your Task Bar's System Tray to be sure the Red Fox is absent. Then set your drives region code as described above. I'm not sure if you have to reboot again after setting or changing your ripper and burner's region codes but if you get a restart message, then do it. Or just reboot anyway to be sure Windows initializes the new region setting you made. Check your drive(s) settings again after your reboot.

Then restart AnyDVD. You can now re-check the "Start AnyDVD Automatically" box now (recommended for other reasons). Start up CloneDVD and try Scarface again. Hope it works for you.

Added note: I am a layman so some of my terminology above may read incorrectly, but my methodology is correct. Referrence these two threads for more info on region codes and AnyDVD/CloneDVD. I think member "Tru" is a software engineer of some kind and really knows his Region Code stuff as relates to Slysoft and other backup software products.
