I've been trying to play some .mkv videos, but I'm running into problems. I have tried to install/uninstall 3 different codecs/packs which includes, ACE, .mkv FAQ from afterdawn, and the pinned thread in here. Each combination of codecs don't change the results at all.

I've tried several media players and each one works in the area that the others don't.

MP Classic = Good subs, but the video is black, beside the subs.

BS Player = The subs are the wrong color, size, poor timing, sometimes don't show up and after the English subs it includes japanese in {}. Perfect Video.

VLC Player = Same as BS Player.

Right off the top it sounds like there may be a problem with the MKV files themselves. If that's not the case you may still be missing the VERSION of the codec needed for the videos, i.e. if the videos were encoded using ver 3.0 of the codec and you have v2.0, you've still got the codec but not the right version and that COULD have the effect you're referring to. What I would recommend to do would cover either case. Get MKVextract, and extract the MKV to it's elementary files, making a seperate folder for each .mkv file, to ensure that you keep the files sorted. If you have a multitude of files you can make a batch file to do this in windows using the dos version of mkv extract to save you time. After you do that, check the codec and version of the AVI using GSpot, then get that particular version of the codec. Use mkvmerge to recreate your MKV files after you have verified that you have the correct version of the codec for the avis and that all files are intact with no errors. Hope this helps.

Every night has its day.
Even forever must come to an end....
I think.
