Hi,

My LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B DVD/CD ROM will not read disks. When I click on how the device is it says ist is corruted or missing (code 39). I do not know what to do I just can't install anything because it won't read anything. I tried updating my driver but I can't find the one I need its the A103.

Can some1 please help me.

It wouldn't surprise me. I have that drive and it sucks. What you report is not a good sign.

Go into Device Manager, click the + next to CD/DVD drives, and see if it's there. If not, you might want to try opening the case and making sure the IDE and power cables are securely connected to the drive. Also check the cable to the motherboard and, if you can see it, the jumper setting.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Go back into device manager and update the driver. If that doesn't work the first time around, then go back into Device Manager and uninstall and reboot. Windows should find and reinstall the driver for it automatically.

For the firmware, go to http://us.lgservice.com/ click on Device Driver which is about midpage and select DVD-ROM (writer) which is about the same place on the following page. The driver for your drive should be on page 2 of the listing. I suggest using the A105 driver: It is the latest and I have had other problems with earlier ones. But you won't be able to do a firmware update until the driver works correctly and you may kill the drive if you try.

Not directly, but P2P programs bring in tons of viruses and malware - probably half the stuff on those networks is virused in some way. A lot of this stuff doesn't have to be "run" per se, just open a vulnerable application and an MP3 or whatnot can infect your machine.

You can reinstall the driver from the disk that came with the drive, your Windows disk, or maybe even off of Windows Update. Any will work the same as the others.

Hi Dunker, my HP Pavilion a1410n DVD/CD Rom won't read anything. I just bought it over the summer and I'm already having problems. I used the lightscribe program twice, I don't know if that has anything to do with it but ever since then it won't read any discs. I have no idea what to do, can you help?

If you have a way to pull the driver and install it in a different pc and test it or put a new dvd burnner is a 100% sure way to find out what is going on but with my experiences it sounds like anouther burnner has bit the dust

There's a procedure of things to test:

1. Are you sure you're using quality media? Read my sig on that. Media causes 90% of DVD problems.

2. See if it's your software. Try using IMGBurn and DVD-Decrypter to read or write discs. They're free. If you use Nero, use 6.6.0.18 or 7.0.2.8, depending on which version you have a license for. If what you have isn't one of those versions, write down your license key, uninstall it, then use the "CleanTool" appropriate to your version from the Nero website, then install one of those two versions I mentioned. If you use Roxio, don't. Uninstall it and download the "zap" tool (Google for it) to remove it entirely.

3. See if a firmware update is available from your DVD burner manufacturer's website. Update. rpc1.org and cdfreaks.com also have lots of updates.

4. If things aren't working at this point, it's time to take the kid gloves off and get a little dirty. Get your Windows or your System Restore CD ready. Go into Device Manager (Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System->Hardware->Device Manager) and click the + sign next to CD and DVD drives (name may be different). Right click your burner, select Properties, and see if it says it's working normally. Look on the driver tab and click Uninstall. Click Apply, Ok, whatever else you need to get out of that screen and restart your computer. Most versions of Windows will automatically find your hardware and install it, but if necessary, use your Windows or Restore CD if it can't find it's driver.

5. If that fails, try unplugging all cables from the DVD burner (with your computer off!) and then start the machine. Then shut down. Replug-in all cables, making sure all cables are seated firmly, including the IDE cable that goes to the motherboard. You should use an 80-conductor, 40-pin cable with modern DVD burners - these usually come with them. While you're at it, you might want to actually take the drive out and look at the labelling to make sure the jumper on the back is properly set and hasn't falled off. This is rare, but it happens. At any rate, when you are ready and the jumper is set right, plug everything back into the drive firmly and start the machine. Your computer should recognize it as "New hardware". Most versions of Windows will install it but have your CD handy if you need it otherwise Windows will treat your burner like a CD player.
6. Check to be sure that the Nero ASPI 2.0.1.74 is installed. Preferably, the System ASPI is NOT installed. If you use Nero, you can find this from Nero InfoTool and looking at the ASPI tab. Reinstalling Nero fresh should cure the ASPI problem in most cases, though not always.

When your machine "finds" the drive, select "Install from a list or specific location". On the next screen, select "Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install". Select CD-ROM Drive, Imapi settings 1,2. The driver is also available here->http://www.soft32.com/download_176554.html

original poster is no more, so no more need for this thread.

if only posters would at least wait for their problems to be fixed before being abusive to posters in other threads. sigh, kids today :P
