PS2 copy-protection in new DVD drives? (Sony)

I recently just bought a Sony DRX-820U to replace my Sony DRX-720 which refused to burn double-layer media anymore. I tried to back up a couple of games using the new 820 however when booting the game in my modded PS2 the machine made all kinds of squealing noises and refused to boot the game (stuck in loading message, although recognizes the game as PS2). Ripped the game and burned with my 720 and it worked perfectly (even when ripped from the copy made from the 820).

Is this some new kind of copy protection where new DVD drives do something or recognize as PS2 game and refuse to burn it properly? Or is it likely that I just got a crappy burner and I should return it for a new one?

Any help appreciated.

well it would be dumb if they just started doing that because ps2 is almost at the end of its life span =/

Just change it to a pioneer or samsung i recommend they are very good
