General PS2 Modding Question

Sorry if this sounds like an ignorant question, but the whole concept of modding platform game systems is a bit foreign to me. I have heard of people modding Xbox's and PS2's, to what extent and for what reason, I do not know. A friend of mine has an Xbox, modded that allows him to store complete games and movies on the hard drive of his Xbox. He can then, access the games/videos at his conveniece via a menu (not the original Xbox menu). I do know he exchanged the original hard drive for a larger capacity one. I am not much of a gamer, but the concept of Video storage appeals to me. I have access to a used PS2, and was considering claiming it for modding sake.
With your knowledge and insight, could you please answer this question for me. What is required to convert an original PS2 to a large multi-media storage center? Ideally, I would like to connect this unit to my home theatre center and access my video collection, much like an iPod. I do know I will require a higher capacity hard drive. From what research I have done, it appears as though I should be able to install any internal PC-compatible hard drive. Is that all, or do I need an elaborate assortment of "mod-chips" and software?
Your guidance is much appreciated.

You would need to buy a ps2 hardrive as the ide connection at the back is smaller then a normal hardrive yes its the same size 3.5inches but different connection or buy an external drive plug it in through the usb but mmovies with a high bit rate will lag as the ps2 has usb version 1.1 not 2.0,as for the other question you will need to load hd advance onto your hardrive so you are able to run a media player of your hardrive because the ps2 media player only recongnizes dvd discs and wma audio discs or you could just get a m odchip like the dmse 3 for the fat ps2 and run the media player via the chip and the other question if already have a home theatre thats pluged into your dvd or amp you can just run it like that but if its nt pluged in and you want to run it via the ps2 you need sorround system with optical connection

You don't need a special "ps2 hdd" there's a lot of regular IDE hdd that will fit in the connector on the network adapter (for the fat ps2s). If you want my advice on the matter, for what you're trying to do an xbox would be a much better fit and I'm sure your friend could help with setting it up. The ps2 is better for gaming.

Just to let you know a PS2 will never been the media center an Xbox can be. It lacks the horsepower and development community of Xbox. It'd be easier IMO and about the same cost if not cheaper to get a used Xbox for less than $100 and soft mod it for free.

In a ps2 he can add a much larger hardrive without oppening the console than the 8gb xbox one i know you can open it and take it out butif he dosent want to open it then?

He's going to have to open the PS2 anyway if he's going to put a modchip in it. Installing a bigger drive in an Xbox is easier than installing a PS2 modchip. I know no one is suggesting he should try disc swapping his way to a PS2 media center. Plus you'd need to open the PS2 to make disc swapping less of a hassle. At the end of the day PS2 makes a great gaming console, but not a media center.

Hey, I really appreciate all the feedback/comments. Since I started this thread, I have continued my investigative work on this project. I have learned quite a bit, but still have some concerns and questions.
Here is where I currently stand:
-I have taken delivery of the PS2(fat v9/10), and have decided against an Xbox
-Apparently the laser is damaged, as it will make a clicking noise and burn holes in game discs...only games, not cd's or dvd's...I am to replace either the laser or whole cptical block
-I have downloaded a copy of the latest PS2Reality Media Player, PRO
-In the process of locating a network adapter...currently bidding on ebay
-Am looking into hard drive options
-Casually considering a soderless mod chip
My current questions and concerns:
-Learned that with some software programs, such as HDLoader, one is limited to how large a hard drive they can connect. Is this the case with PS2Reality Media Player PRO? I intend to purchase a 750GB IDE hard drive...Will this work?
-Have absolutly no clue to do after I get all the components I need. Again, I am not all that techno-savy. Exactly what am I to do to get the PS2Reality program on the new hard drive, and what do I have to do to even get the PS2 to recognize the hard drive?
-Someone mentioned booting options for the PS2, relative to having the program on a memory card or saved to the unit's internal storage...with a mod chip. Ideally I would like the unit to boot to PS2 Reality, without the need for a memory card. Do I need to invest in a mod chip too?
Beyond this, I don't know what else I will need to know, but I am sure I am still missing something. Any assistance will be much appreciated.

You keep on thinking that dazila. I'm sure plenty on this site would disagree with you. If you searched some of my posts here you may see that too. I just try to be helpful when I can and get help when I need it. Am I perfect? Of course not. No one is. However, personal attacks online are never my style. I have no need to get all worked over some stranger online who wasn't even talking to me. BTW, I can post whatever the hell I like on here as long as I'm not violating the TOS. Deal with it.

Great.
One thing why would you go through A ton of this stuff why not just buy a pc it has everyhting and is much easier then either of the conolses

Because I would prefer a dedicated component in my home entertainment system. Maybe, when money isn't as much of an issue, I will have a well configured iMac attached to an external 2TB hard drive which is wirelessy linked to a Roku system, but for now I will Frankenstein my PS2.
