Hey, I'm thinking of buying my friend's PSP. It's a 2.0 and his UMD drive is pretty much broken. Would I be able to downgrade it to 1.5 and play ISO's of the game's I already own without using the UMD? I haven't read about it in a while but I was pretty sure a while ago you needed a UMD in the drive to play an ISO.

So my questions are:

Does downgrading from 2.0 -> 1.5 require the UMD at all?

Does running an ISO or any other homebrew require the UMD?

downgrading does not use the UMD.

when you use devhook you have to have a UMD in. UNLESS you have an older version of devhook that doesnt need a UMD.

anyone ever used that method? Does it only work with the older version of DevHook?

well sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. it spins up and sounds like it is seeking, but does not recognize the disk, and it keeps acting like it is seeking.

why dont you just try seeing if you can downgrade first on his psp to 1.5 and see if you can play isos on them.
you will most likely need a umd for that though..

if it works buy it from him. though really really doubt that he will sell it to you once he knows whats its capable of

antheus, it depends on the iso. If the iso needs 1.0 or 1.5 to play, then you dont need one. If it needs like 2.0/2.5/2.6 etc.. Then ya, youll need a umd. I know this cause i can only play 2 isos without the umd and the rest need a umd.

I see...why does the psp need the UMD in it to play the games? Lets say hypothetically it recognizes there is a disk in the drive, would that be fine? Does the PSP actually need to access the disk? Unfortunately I can't test atm, in another state.

Yeah you need a disc in the drive to trick the psp into thinking the iso is that umd.
