I am extremely pumped for this system. I haven't been this excited about video games since the N64. That is saying a lot, as N64 was the most amazing system (mainly during the period right after launch) ever.

Problem is, the Wii seems to have ONE fault. I have been reading everywhere I can, and I still have not found an answer to the question that is burning inside me. That question is, "Will the Wii be region-free?" There are many levels on which it could be region-free too, so it isn't a very easy question.

First, will it be region-free with the virtual systems (old emulated games).

Second, will the Gamecube games be region-free?

Third, will the actual Wii titles themselves be region-free?

I did see an article with one of the higher-ups from Nintendo (VP of something in America) saying that the first party Wii titles WOULD be region-free, but the third parties would be able to choose whether to region-code their games or not. This will be possible as the systems ARE region-coded, but allow for the playing of games from other regions. I can only hope that this pans out, and I am able to play games on my Wii, regardless of their intended point of sale.

Any links (preferably official press releases) providing hard-evidence of what the region-free situation will be with the Wii would be very appreciated.

Wii officially Region Locked

Nintendo of America has confirmed that the Wii will be region locked for both first and third party games. Nintendo issued a statement saying ?Wii will be region locked by territory?.

The whole issue started when Nintendo?s genius Perrin Kaplan made up the fact that the Wii will be region free, and then a Nintendo UK representative said Kaplan was wrong. At least now it?s official; you shouldn?t pre-order your Wii (or games) from other territories

what ever you do DONT ORDER IT FROM A COUNTRY YOU ARE NOT FROM. dont import it you might be pissed

Yeah, I have tracked down some articles that have quotes saying that it won't be region-free. I still haven't seen the official press release from Nintendo, but I can only imagine that the info is true. What a terrible move on Nintendo's part. I would be especially pissed if, for example, I owned a Japanese DS (and Japanese games) and then was going to get a US Wii. Wait a second, that is the situation I am in.
