I have a version 14 slim ps2. I was going to buy a Matrix Infinity GD version modchip. I am going to have the folks at TeamModders put the chip in for me. I just bought a good DVD burner off newegg.

Is all this I need in order to play backups?
Since my PS2 is version 14, it can read DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs, correct?

yes thats all you need, go to matrix infnity website when you get your ps2 back to download the latest firmware for your modchip.

Awesome, your amazing. The newest Playstation 2's can read DVD-Rs and DVD+R's, correct? I am pretty sure it was a problem with just the launch Playstation 2s.

yes, it can read both those media types, but get decent media. maxells and Sony's. are pretty decent media and are reasonably priced, you don't have to buy expensive media to get the best results, i would recommend to buy the maxells because that's what i use on my v14 DO NOT buy memorex or any economy cheap brand.
