Screen stuck on DO NOT DISCONNECT

I pluged in my ipod to the usb, my Itunes popped up but the ipod didnt show up on devices. So i went to safely disconnect, it said ok to disconnect but it never came off the ipod screen and its stuck at the minute i pluged it in. can somebody help me with this problem or am i screwed?
