Okay;

So I've had this Linksys BEFSR41 router for quite some time now; and the internet has been working great ever since I figured out how to get it working on both computers (both with xp on them).....

But; here's the thing; NOW; I would like to share files between them; but lately I've tried many methods but haven't found a solution to my problem (even though it isn't uncommmon)...

What happens is; when I click into network places and try to view the computers on my network; I am able to see both of them with my newer p4 (w/XP); but am told that "I don't have access to the files; contact the administrator,,etc...".....but when I look on my older computer; (which also has XP), I don't see either of the computers from the network.....

...Does anyone know how I can set up these two computers to be able
to:

-Browse & Share files between themselves through my router

-Share the printer I have hooked up via USB on my newer p4 computer;

....I've tried too many times now taking the easy way out and using the home network setup wizard in the XP control panel; but it doesn't seem to do crap for me;

...So; hopefully someone can give me some clue as to how I can get these two computers two be able to 'see' and browse each other so they can share files.....

P.S. What's funny though; before I ever had the router; I had an Intellinet switch that worked just fine between the two; but ever since I re-set up the network and stuff with the router; I keep getting the error that "I don't have the permission to access these files"...

...lastly; yes, I do have designated share folders too, so technically , I think I'm doing what im supposed to; but there's gotta be one little thing that doesn't wanna click and let me share files.....

thanx again ad;
Jake

try this thread as it may help, except with the Norton firewall part.

Thanx; w/ a little tweaking of my own I was able to fix the problem myself a few hours later.....but much appreciation for that thread anyway; it did help.

glad you got it figured out. But "My Network" sucks.

Care to share your solution? For me, I had to set access in Norton (on one computer). And I do everything through the run command. Make sure I set what ever folders I want to share (and name them).

for example on my Dell I share, shareddocuments, D drive, X drive and my Y drive.

So if I want to connect from my laptop or my gaming rig I type in the run command \\dell-8250\shareddocuments or which ever folder/drive I want to connect to. "My Network" has never worked for me :(

I know this sounds stupid; but the way I solved the problem was by downloading Network Magic and then running the setup wizard with it when you first run;<--my guess is that somehow that setup wizard fixes your computer's settings (at least did mine) and corrects anything wrong with your network;......

...after running the setup wizard and all and finding out network magic wasn't free after all; I decided to ditch that prog; and see if magicall 'my network places' was working....and guess what It Was!!! So; I'm guessing that the setup wizard that comes with that prog. somehow correctly tweakes your internal settings to get a network working to share files....idk; I can't guarantee it'll work for you; but it did for me....and the funny thing is, I didn't do anything....

P.S. Note that I didn't uninstall Network Magic after finding out my network was working right; for fear of my computer restoring its previous settings and resulting in a non-working network as I had b4..

Once again; I can't guarantee it'll work for everyone; but after I run that setup wizard; I was able to go into my network places and exchange/copy/paste files from one computer to another....
