I have a desktop and a notebook. Have shared files to and from for a while without any problems. Now norton 2006 was installed and has messed everything up. Sometimes I get a connection, but most times nothing. I have reinstalled the small office network wizard on both machines using different combinations of workgroups and names a hundred times and still no luck. I have a dialup modem on desktop which I use as server as my printers are on there. Notebook I use as a host. Please help hopefully a detailed explination will solve my stress as i need to speedily move on in my life.

Appreciated

is the norton a security suite or anti-virus. if a suite than disable the firewall to see if that works.

Norton's is good at trashing systems. It's the worst suite on the market. Return it if you can.

If you installed the firewall, look for an option to allow Microsoft Networking, sometimes called file-sharing a.k.a NetBIOS or NBT. Been awhile since I tested out the Norton's firewall and I don't know what they've changed. Alternative to that, if there is a "trusted sites" zone, set it to your base internal network address if you're on a private network (specifically, 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x). If you're on a home network using a base address of 192.168.0.0, which is common for most routers like D-Link and Netgear, set that address as a trusted site and use a netmask of 255.255.255.0.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.
