Just out on a whim here, but seeing how PAL video is the standard for almost every country besides america and I am not sure what you mean by it, but if it is all in japanese, writing boxes and the like, chances are pretty good you have a jap version.

The buttons arent literally switched on the button pad but O does act like the main X button on Japanese PSPs. You can fix that though easily.(with xflash)
Japanese PSPs will play all games but they can only play NTSC JP movies
@hexcodez PAL is only used in Europe and a few other countries. NTSC is actually better as it has a faster refresh rate.

very well said
anyways pal/secam is only in europe/middle east asia/australia, japan/usa and the rest of the world is NTSC. PAL is only 50hz and NTSC is 60hz so you get less flickers on NTSC and very much nicer on Progressive mode rather than interlaced.
this is not applicable to UMD Games.
japanese psp uses O as the main enter button and X as cancel
as for the real internal hardware try using UMD movie from different regions and see which one plays. start from the one from your place.
i doubt you can refund your money if you know its a fake, so as long as the 2gb MS works, be happy with it.
the japanese is basically the same as the US version except for the swapped X, O function.

actually NTSC is only used in mostly america and canada, outside of that you have wierd ratios, but as for japan, china & parts of russia, and Europe in general only use PAL, bad americans thinking their standard is the world wide standard, I should know about the two considering I have to give great concideration to the two when I distribute film work.

An advantage of Jap psp:
Quote: I think another reason to avoid the USA model besides the alleged inferior Samsung screen is the possibility of weaker wifi range. The law there for the ISM band permits less power ouput than the 10 mw allowed in Australia & UK. Japan is the same? I see nothing about radiated power output in the PSP specs.
And I think we need all the power we can get these days on this frequency spectrum with the increase in wifi usage, 2.4ghz full spectrum phones (whose channels we mostly can't control) and with all the hi powered radio cams now.
My experiments with American Av senders & baby monitors have shown them to make it thru 1 or two brick walls at best.
I guess it depends whether you want compete with Johnnie up the street or Johnnie sitting next to you. Or you want to be 5 metres from the hot spot doing the (possibility of) surfing and attracting attention or around the block.
U know that the tendence will be, probably sonner that expected, that JAP PSP will also have Samsung screen. It's cheaper, and it causes less dead pixel problems. For sony i believe that are enough reasons for go to the samsung screen lcd!

i do live in japan, i dont know about which screen make is better but i think sony will not make psp for us market inferior from any model from other market. but here in japan sony opted for the dreaded TA-082 since it first came out. i dont think their gonna go back to the non-TA board, what a bummer until someone figures out how to insert 1.5 FW in it or just simply make it directly hombrewable.
we do have the same NTSC ratio from usa and the philippines too which has 10x more movie watchers than the movie watchers from japan.
one thing to note is that channels 1 2 3 4 or somethimes even 5 of the philippines is out of range by japanese made televisions (frequency range impairement)
@flightx that just simply means that the emulated firmware by devhook is from UK. if you want to watch US UMD then just install firmware from US to your devhook.
