I got some Sony DVD-r's from my parents in return for doing thema favor and converting camcorder footage to DVD... but they say "made in taiwan" on them. How bad are these as far as being able to play in most DVD players? They are wanting me to make a couple of DVD's of their trip to germany for them to send of to other family members...

what do you all think.... keep in mind i have 50 of them so if they are total trash i'll have to probably take them back since 50 will last me at least a year for the amount of backing up and tape converting i do

A.) take the disks back adn get some Maxells ( only other name brand @ Wal-Mart according to my father who bought the disks for me)

B.) keep them adn take my chances?

I will be wanting to use the rest of the disks for backing up movies... but i know thye are reguarded as junk on this forum... but i've also heard a lot of bad stuff about memorex ( also made in taiwan) but ive never had a playing problem with them.... so what's the deal on the preferences or reputation of the disks i have now?

It depends on what the rated speed are on those sony's. The older -4x and 1x-4x were pretty crappy.

The faster 1x-8x and 1x-16x sony dash format media are pretty decent.Ty-g03 can be found on the -1x-16x MIJ spindles. Those are very good, and usually mixed in with the taiwanese spindles.

A) Japanese maxells are very good-hitachi. Beware of the dash taiwanese maxell media. Verbatim are very good and easy to find locally. They're on sale sunday- $7 per 25 pk at either Office Depot or Best Buy- I can't remember which store it is out of those 2. Jasper44 has the sales for media in the DVD-R media forum.

B)I'd take them back to find the MID sony -1x-16x Ty-G03.

Memorex: They have a lot of different manufacturers using their name. They have some good ones also, but very hard to know which ones you get till you open them up. There's a 75% chance of getting crap when it comes to memorex media.

fiddy: What's the brand name and model # of your burner?

BTW: Wrong forum. I'll notify a mod and get it moved to the DVD-R Media forum.

Personally, I wouldn't chance it with either. There's the Made-in-Japan rule. Only buy MIJ media, with Verbatim being the sole exception. Gwendolin is certainly right about the Sonys being better than Maxells, and what you have are probably ok-quality media by any standard, but you'd be best off shopping around a bit rather than rolling the dice, maybe if that means getting some MIJ Sony. FWIW, Verbatims go on sale on Sunday, if you can wait, at Best Buy for $6.99 per 25, and if you are somewhere where there is no BB then perhaps you can shop around a bit.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

fiddy: Most LG drives have the bitsetting capability to booktype. Booktyping is done with plus format media. I'm not sure if you need a special program or a certain burn engine-but remember that when you send those backups to all of your family. Compatability issues may arrise. There is a chance that some of your family's stand alone players may not recognize them. It'll be an error like:
Wrong format
Wrong region
No Disc
Dirty disc

Stand alone players are screwy when it comes to reading dash or plus format media.Booktyping usually takes care of that issue. Booktyping alters the plus format media and sets them to Dvd-rom- the most compatable of all dvd formats. It fools stand alone players into thinking they are actual dvd-rom backups-like the original dvds are.

Good Luck and Burn on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The LG GSA-4167B Drive definitely IS capable of booktype setting. I should know, I have 4 of them. Solid drives. They will read & burn anything. Multi-Format drives, including DVD-RAM.
They like Sony media just fine. They also LOVE Verbatim Media. As far as booktype setting. These drives support it with Nero for sure. The DVD+R format is better if your standalone will play them, if not, booktype them to DVD-ROM. As far as Maxell media, the only really good Maxell Media is DVD+R 8x Made in Japan. (Hitachi made)
They are very hard to find, but Sweet!
BTW: If you have not updated the firmware on your GSA-4167B drive, the latest & best is DL13. Can be downloaded at LG's global website.
Be Sure you follow update instructions to the letter.

Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.
