Hi,

My Problem:
At first I noticed that I was having problems downloading with Bitlord. My downloads would jump from 180kbs to 1kbs and back again every minute... reinstalled bitlord, nothing. Then installed Utorrent, same thing. Changed internet providers... a little better... but the it is a better source now.

Now... after a month of this, when the files are "checking" my cpu is maxed at 100% and will eventually crash the system. Same thing with Winavi... start converting and system crashes. I get a quick blue screen and when my system starts back up... the windows error page says that I need to update my video device drivers or reduce my acceleration... I did both of those and the same thing still happens with the same blue screen and the same windows error page. Also.. when using excel, if I am grabbing some cells and scrolling fast... it reboots... playing Diablo II... it reboots. When it reboots... my mouse doesn't work... I have to reboot again to get it to register.

I have spoken to some local tech's and asked if it could be my memory, operating system(not genuine), video card, etc... but they just think I should buy a new computer... for cost will end up the same than replacing parts, and they don't know what part that is needed. My system may be 3 years old... but I am pretty sure it is salvageable and at minimul cost.

Would you have any idea what is causing the crashing? It doesn't seem to be related to any new software, and viruses (AVGfree) and spyware(Adware) checks have been done. I have looked for NVidia firewall to turnoff... this version doesn't seem to have one... I turned off the windows firewall. I do believe it is some hardware as it starting crashing like this 2 years ago... but only with Diablo II.

I am currently using Utorrent, DVDShrink, WinAVI, NeroStartSmart, ratDVD, DaemonTools

Windows XP Pro (Not Genuine)
AMD Athlon XP 2000+, MMX, 3DNow, 1.7Ghz
768Mb Ram
250G HD
DirectX 9.0c
GForce4 MX440
Mouse: A4Tech WOP-35PU Optical WheelMouse

Thanks so much in advance
Kim

ok..... first off I would do a restore from a date when your computer was working fine. hit START/ALL PROGRAMS/ASSESSORIES/SYSTEM TOOLS/SYSTEM RESTORE ..... then hit NEXT with the RESTORE MY COMPUTER TO AN EARLIER TIME! check the calendar and see when you had your computer running properly (try to remember when it was running fine). Hit that date and then hit NEXT and see if the computer will bring it back to that date. Understand that you might lose data that was put in your computer from that date onward, but it's worth the loss if you get your computer back in good working order and don't have to buy a new computer! Also if you are concerned about losing your pictures, files, and such..... try to save them on an external hard drive or disk before doing a system restore. good luck!

Thanks for your responses.

IHoe: I was thinking of doing a system restore, but I don't think this would fix the problem. It may have started going really bad about a month ago... but the problem 1st started a few years ago when Diablo would reboot. If I did a system restore, it is possible that it would help abit and not crash as much... like it was a month ago... but something in the computer has progressively gotten worse... maybe barely functioning any longer... video card? Even a year ago, before we started getting hardcore into burning... I reformatted the harddrive and reinstalled everything... replaced a memory stick, and the tech thought that would work... but it didn't. At this time, we have so much software on the computer compared to earlier... what ever is causing this, is getting completely overloaded.

wocts: I am not sure what you mean by "air cooler"... I did replace the PSU about 2 months ago... and the tech said he didn't know why it went, he replaced it and had a hard time booting my computer back up... finally did and said that something may have blown the PSU. I downloaded "speedfan"... checked the speeds.. also downloaded a program that tested the heat of ???notsure??? but that was fine too. I have not blown out dust as of yet.

I have downloaded so much software lately... but have uninstalled it after testing purposes... run my scans to make sure none of the downloads caused any extra problems.

Maybe I should just buy a new computer eh? But, I am sure it is one hardware item causing the grief... just not sure what?

Tx

i thougt that one of your fan is not running, and therefore the cpu is going to hot and you have a crash.
Sometimes the graficard causes problems. Did you already tried an other one ?
Did you make any changes in the Bios or do you changed a jumper on the motherboard, so that the cpu is not running in the right speed?

I did run that heat test and all was good. I have not changed anything in bios, or video card or motherboard... but i did have a 12hour system test done at a local tech shop and there were no problems reported. I am thinking of taking it to another place and getting it tested again... maybe this time they will find the problem? I originally thought one of my memory sticks was shot again. We do run alot of programs on the computer. Even the internet seems to run slower than it should.
