I have a laptop and I was wondering if anyone could help me with this problem. I have tried to fix it myself but so far can?t find a solution.
I can use the laptop using wireless connecting to the router/modem (2WIRE) with no problems.

The problem is that when trying to connect (laptop) using cat5 to the router/modem (2WIRE) to the internet , I get a ?connection has limited or no connectivity? and when I run IE, I get the page cannot be displayed.

I tried manually assigning IP also. it shows its CONNECTED but when I run IE, I get the page cannot be displayed.

I have tried connecting with disabled firewalls/antivirus and restarting the router.

Still cant connect to the internet
The cable itself seems fine as it works on other computers.


Desktop : HP
Laptop : Dell Inspiron
OS : Windows XP sp2
Router/Modem : 2WIRE
Network Adapters: 1394 Net Adapter
Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller

Heres what i have done so far:

1. Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
2. Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

3. ipconfig /all
Windows IP Configuration

- checked event viewer (system)
- nothing shows with red x indicating error
-found a couple of warnings for (dhcp)
- - -description: Your computer has automatically configured the IP address
for the Network Card with network address 000BDB3A50C6. The IP address
being used is 169.254.97.90


4. ipconfig /release
Connection-specific DNS Suffix .. :
IP Address ............ : 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask ..........: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway .....:

5. ipconfig /renew
Windows IP Configuration (after /renew)
-An error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection : Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
- then it reverts back to 169.254.97.90

-DHCP Server is working since i can connect using wireless

Im totally at lost here
If anyone has any ideas what the problem is please help

I had this problem. Did you just do a fresh install of windows?

If so you just need to find what kind of network interface card you are using and get the drivers. That stumped me but I found the drivers and it worked right away.

If you can't find the drivers you're screwed as laptops normally can't have new parts like that installed.

no i havent re-installed windows on laptop
i used to connect online using cable before changing to dsl and buying a desktop

maybe it's a problem with you settings... call your service provider and have them help you. some networks are weird that way.

Your Modem's MAC might not be registered with the service provider's database. Try registering it and you might be instantly connected to the internet.

Did you try PING, and did you get an IP address?

My ISP needed to register our router before it would let us access. But you only have to do it if you use a router. You can register your conection through your computer otherwise... i thought it was pretty cool.

hi, thank you for replying to my inquiries.

heres the set up:

*Desktop win xp (pro):
**ethernet card
*Laptop xp sp2 (home edition)
**on board ethernet
**802.11g wifi card
*DSL (2WIRE) modem/router (4ports & wireless capable)


1. Desktop connected to modem/router thru cable (cat5).
a) connects to the internet with no problem.

2. Laptop connects to modem/router thru wireless card.
a) connects to the internet with no problem.


PROBLEMS:
1. when trying to connect (laptop) using cat5 to the router/modem
(2WIRE) to the internet , I get a ?connection has limited
or no connectivity? and when I run IE, I get the page cannot be displayed.

Things ive tried to try and the fix problem:
1. I have tried connecting with disabled firewalls/antivirus
2. reset modem/router settings.
3. The cable is fine as it works on other computers.
4. DHCP Server is working since i can connect using wireless
5. Reset WINSOCK entries
6. Reset TCP/IP stack
7. IPConfig /all
8. IPConfig /renew
9. IPConfig /release
10. tried to ping router with no luck :(

:( dont know what else to do.

1. Estuansis - Did you just do a fresh install of windows?
A: NO i did not re-install windows on my laptop

2. Estuansis - maybe it's a problem with you settings.
A: i dont think its with the laptop or modem/router settings. since i
can use both going online thru the gateway. only time i cant go
online with the laptop is when using cable (cat5).

3. YesYou - Your Modem's MAC might not be registered with the service provider's database.
A: im not so sure what you mean. but, im able to go online on both computers.
only problem is when i try using cable (cat5) on laptop to connect to modem/router.
4. YesYou - Did you try PING, and did you get an IP address?
A: no i cant ping an ip. i tried pinging routers ip, google, yahoo when laptop is wired (cat5) to modem/router.

keep it coming and ill keep trying to figure this out with all your help.

Have you tried a different piece of cable? Are you sure the connectors aren't dirty or damaged?

This probably has to do with the setup of your wireless connection. In Network Connections what do you have? Are any disconnected? What will happen is that you will have 2 Local Area Connections and the wireless connection is the only one being used. I have had this problem before.

In Network Connections i have the ff:

1. Local Area Connection ---->use for when using wired connection
Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller

2. 1394 Connection
1394 net adapter

3. wireless Network Connection 2 ---->use for when using wireless card
Belkin 802.11g network adapter

TCP/IP Settings ----> set to Obtain an IP Address Automatically / set to obtain DNS server automatically

settings on TCP/IP on both wireless and wired are the same.

dont see anything thats out of place.

its still the same problem.

tried and update your modem driver, see if that helps.

go to command prompt and type in "ping localhost". If you do not get a reply, that means your modem is no good.

nasayin, I dont think the problem is with the modem since i currently have a desktop connected to the modem/router which im using right now. and the laptop which is in the den connected wireless which is also working..

PLS READ BELOW: (pls take note on #2)

I meant your laptop ethernet card. Use the ping command when you are connected hard wired, ping localhost and see if you get a reply back.

not all laptops, for instance mine is integrated wireless..

You're right Creaky that not all laptops uses wireless card and some have onboard 802.11g wireless integrated card. but if you read my post # 3 & 4, it explains what i have in my laptop.

Anyways, thank you for replying. But it seems like nothing in any respons i get is going anywhere closer to finding a solution to the problem i have. So I guess its time to close this thread.

Sounds like a corrupt stack. I know you reset it, but still 'feels' like it is the problem.

Instead of manually resetting the stack, try this.

Has worked for me several times on clients PCs.

I didnt see an answer to one of the questions. Have you tried a new/different cable? Use the one that the desktop uses, as it is known to be good.

I've had the same problem doing my head in all day until I found your post.

AVG went a bit nuts a few days ago which I guess is what caused the problem in my case.
