Illegal Disc - COuld not perform end of disc-at-once

Hello. New here, and have found some threads usefull without having to ask questions before, but now I'm stumped. I have read the other LONG threads on this and cannot figure out my problem (other than my dvd burner is too old, but it worked earlier today). My dvd burner is a Nec DVD+RW ND-6100A. It's a removeable drive from my Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop.
First, I had the problem of "power calibration errors". Never seen this before. This did poke it's head out when I switch from maxell discs to verbatim(within an hour..as I ran out of my (I read on here that verbatim are decent discs). I read some threads and determined it was probably my firmware that was old.
Everyone pointed me towards the http://tdb.rpc1.org/ (Dangerous brothers) website for firmware updates and I flashed using the recommended one for the NEC ND-6100A. I then went to burn and got the above error (illegal disc).
Below is the log. Can anyone give me a hint to try something else or am I screwed and need to spend some money on a new burner.
