I'm a fan of TY media but for different purposes I like to use different media and I like how some 'branded' discs look. Previously I was buying Sony DVD-R because it was always on sale but found out it was made in Hong Kong and the kind that go on sale are always the Hong Kong version. Been seeing lots of TDK on sale recently and heard that TDK was a premium brand and better then the Hong Kong Sony. Should I go with TDK?

Before shopping for 'branded' discs in stores I went online and I only found premium brands like Verbatim in individual jewel cases that were pretty expensive. Can someone recommend me a premium 'branded' media for DVD-R (in store or online).

If you insist on branded media the choice is easy...Verbatim.

Verbatim is about the only decent branded media left to buy in retail stores. I wouldn't waste my money on anything else.

sony's and maxells can be a decent media if they are I believe mit or mij. I have heard pos and neg for TDK. if you can get them on sale go for them. I personally go for the verbatim when on sale at bb. but each their own. hope this helps a little.

Nope, I won't buy TDK at any price. Too high of a chance of getting crappy CMC manufactured media!

Sony I'll buy with no problem if it's on sale. The MIT is good & I've also found a few packs (4) of TY media in -R MIJ Sony 50 packs. Just look for the white octagonal spacer & you've got TY media. but don't buy it full price since TY media can be found at cheaper prices online.

oops. The Sony I mentioned is actually MIT not Hong Kong (I just double checked). I guess I can feel confident in them for now.

I would say that it's great to know that their are other media brand's out there besides the one that is being focused on the threads!Although TDK is one of the most unlikely to have a better quality than TY's or Verbatim. As a(novice)2-years getting to know all there is to backing up DVD's,Xbox Games,To knowing which DVD software downloads to use to knowing about sony's new way of copy protection etc.To my experience, with the TDK brand-TTHO2 blank single layer +/-R types,Have not given me any problem's what so ever? Iv'e purchased 2-50-Pk.spindles 100% from picture quality ,to the sound exellent!!At first,Iv'e been using FUJI DVD-/+R for about a year- 1/2,before I tried the TDK's,The FUJI brand was also a very excellent brand.100% of the time I copied my originals DVD's they came out exactly the way the original did,but shrunkdown to a 4.7GB.I would like to say that I own a MD16XDVD9A2 DVD reader/writer MadDog.It could be that some DVD writer just need to update their Firmware.

quitt- Tdk as the other members mentioned is not on the best loved list around here for the very reasons they mentioned ! They ( TDK ) have pretty much gotten out of the DVD Media biz so any disc you find are most likely old stock ! They also suffer /Suffered from too many OEM's making their media for them - Depending on when and what type and speed of Tdk disc you bought you could end up with Tdk, RicohJpn , or Moser Baer media or even the Dreaded CMC ! So the chances of getting the same quality disc is lessened due to tdk changing who manufacturers their media for them !often! I have used Tdk Media in the past 8X tdk Mfr. and Some 4X Tdk DVD+R / Ricohjpn with no problems ! I understand you use what you like , can afford , or works well in your burner ! And if that is TDk For you So be It ! But if you are asking is it the best branded Media then no. I would have to agree with the Afterdawn .com membership on that . And like them I would recommend Verbatim and or the SONY/ Taiyo Yuden Media for that position - For quality , consistency!, and cost to performance ratio ( on sale ) Those two are top dog ! Some Prefer Taiyo yuden media ( Mij Sony 's or Taiyo 's own media) some the Verrbatims - I have used both & am equally happy with both ! But given a preffered choice - I would Choose ( Made in Japan ) media = Taiyo yuden ( MIJ -FUJI's Or Sony's ) - Maxell's Mij Media ) Followed by verbatims , Riteks & ricohjpns & Sony Taiwans ) I would avoid off brands & anything made By CMC ! Brand name is less important than who actually makes the disc ! Verbatim Makes their own media althgough Taiyo Yuden has made some for them ( Not available in Usa) Taiyo Yuden Makes MIJ Sony & MIJ Fuji ( Rare ) and Hitachi/ Maxell Makes Mij Maxells ) Ritek & Ricohjpn make media for Officedepot ) Ritek also Makes some of Maxell's media . What seperates the good media from bad is Conistant Quality of manufacture - which Verbatim & Taiyo Yuden are known For ! Consider Cmc - Crap media is made in Taiwan ( Boo Hiss , Boo !) But That Verbatims are also Made in taiwan ( HUrray !!!!) what seperates the two other than disparate reputaions is consistency - Verabitims are consistently great & CMC is inconsistant or consistantly bad ! BUt like I said what works for you is what you use Good luck in your burning adventures quitt & Happy burning
