I had a spindle of Sony DVD-R's that around the inside of the disc said DVD-R version 2.0

These discs worked fine in my burner.

My buddy gave me a 50 pk spindle of Sony DVD-R's that said DVD-R Ver 2.1

These will not work in my burner. They say illegal disc everytime....

I have an NEC 1300A, with 1.0c as my firmware. I am guessing I have a firmware issue, but rpc1.org says this is the newest firmware out there for this burner. Is there a update? Or a hacked version out there? Can someone point me in the right direction, PLEASE!!!

that firmware may be up to date, but it's 3 years old!.

According to some of my old posts, the NEC 1300A can burn to -R discs, but only at 4.0x for DVD-R and 2.0x for DVD-RW discs. As for plus format, it is only capable of burning to 4.0x DVD+R and 2.4x DVD+RW discs

edit- very little or nothing can be done to improve a 1300A - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197820

A new NEC, 3550A maybe. or something similar. New liteon lightscribe dvd drives are good drives. And pioneer 111 is a good drive too. I like Lg drives; but i'm one of the only people around that would recommend them it seems LOL

Yes that's quite a good drive for it's price.
See this site

for the review.

I don't know if it supports booktype, but I suppose that review should say; although I didn't read it properly.

Looks good to me.

Holy Crap....

I just found a little proggie Called MediaCodeSpeedEdit or MCSE for short....

It allowed me to add the media code given to me by DVD Identifier.

I re-flashed my drive, and guess what? I am now burning those SONY 2.1s!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe I will look for a tut, or even write one.

Oh well, I am still getting a better burner anyway....
