Download and run Nero info Tool. You can get it on Afterdawn from the software section.
Then it will show your drives firmware.
You can then get the latest firmware form this great site,
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php
Hope that helps.

No no no! Lol
You tried to flash your drive with the wrong firmware! Ok no worries, lets just clear it up.
You want the 10GE firmware, for DELL OEM drives.
Download that one and flash. A few things to remember, dont multitask during the flash!!

@F150FX4 -
Ripper pointed me towards this thread, i have this to offer -
the standard NEC 1100A can manage the following = 4 DVD+R, 2.4 DVD+RW
From looking here - http://herrie.org/upgrdr.html the 1100A can be morphed into a 1300A, (ie via firmware update you can wring a little more life out of this burner, but not a great deal as 4x discs are becoming more scarce now) but it's a 50% success rate for either (i interpret the success rate to mean 50% success rate of burning to media at the newer speeds of the 1300A firmware, not 50% chance of the firmware upgrade itself working).
if you morph this old drive into a 1300A, you have access to the following new capabilities - 4.0x DVD-R & 2.0x DVD-RW
Basically firmware is what 'teaches' a drive about makes of media, burn speeds, how to interpret media etc etc, and your drive is just not recognising that media as the firmware is (probably current) however very old and the discs you're trying to use are newer than the burner is equipped to recognise/use.

no problem; am still looking to see if the Dell can be upgraded to 1300A, no luck so far, other than seeing how much a 1300A was, back in 2003 - "the ND-1300A is available for around $170 OEM" - that's horrific!.
anyways, still searching, but so far it seems the update is only from NEC to NEC, not found enough info on Dell to NEC...

i personally would never buy a burner of eBay. there's a few burners out now (new) that are real cheap online. Ripper has a few makes he can quote no doubt...

Yes creaky is right, you dont want to get one off ebay unless you have money to spare.
If you want an NEC i'd say the 3550A, or a Pioneer, a LiteOn or an LG.
I am no good at quoting model numbers so if you find one that you like, give us a link and i'll have a look for you.
