Ok to start off the specs of this computer are:
Slot 1 PIII 500mhz
EPoX EP-6VBA mobo
368mb of PC100 ram (100mhz)
Windows XP SP2
3com etherlink xl 10/100 NIC
this computer is really old and I just want it to be a guest computer so when anyone comes to my house they don't take up my gaming computer viewing myspace, im'ing, or playing party poker. The problem is sometimes the internet for it works and other times it doesn't. It's hook up using a 100mbps cat5 ethernet cable to my U.S Robotics 5601 router. The router works perfectly because I got 3 other computers hooked up wired and even my psp hook up wireless and it still works. What I can identify is that sometimes it gets an ip address and works. Other times it gets an IP address and it still doesn't get any internet. Configuring it manually never works (I could use the same manual setting on any of my 3 other comps or any of the other 100 pcs that I use in my NET+ class so its not misconfiguring it). Windows xp installs drivers by default and windows update doesn't give any new ones. The last time I got it to work was like a week ago then I just didn't have any need for it so I turned it off and now when I try to go on the net from it, it doesn't get any internet connection. This is seriously weird, I never seen this on any wired connections. Could it be that this NIC doesn't work (I tried it on an identical NIC too and it also doesn't work so maybe this is a software error) I really need this to work in 18 hrs from this posting. That's probably too unreasonable though so I don't expect answer so fast but it would be cool, I've been trying to find the answer since Friday and I still can't get anything. Thanks in advance too since this post is sooooo long.
