i dont know if it is the dvd burner or the disc i have sucessfully burned other discs at 8x max fujifilm currently and verbatim all 8x or lower no prob. just bought memorex DVD-R 16x and i go to burn something in Nero or decrypter and it fails right away. i went to nec to get a firmware update maybe that is the problem but it says that i cannot do it if i have a external dvd with a hp and some other computers but mine is a compaq and compaq is made by HP so i dont want to mess it up so i am hesitant to try the firmware update. any suggestions on to how i can burn with the memorex.

Stop buying Memorex and stick with Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden. See my sig on that.

Odds are good that you got Ritek G05. NECs don't seem to like G05. A firmware update might help (and, if you go to the trouble of updating firmware, you may as well do the job right and use one of the bitsetting firmwares from Liggy's and Dee's at http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com.) But I'd stay away from Memorex.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

It thinks you have an HP burner installed rather than an NEC?

What version of the firmware are you using? The most current version is 3.07. You might not need to upgrade.

so who is its the computer or NEC does the computer think that my burner is a hp becasue everytime i go to burn something it always says nec but i dont know how to check the firmware anyway but i wrote to nec and they said that it is not recommended to do a firmware update through usb or iee port but they said to install it in the computer first them do the fimeware but i dont want to do it because i dont know if the power supply will fry the burner or what not so i dont think i want to mess with that but can i take the burner and use it internally it is a internal burner in a case with ribbon cable and its own power supply so can take the burner and put it in the computer

hey can you let me know how to hook up the external drive internally. i just tryied and the computer didnt get past the starting screen when it boots up like my in compaq it didnt get past there. what i did was replased my broken dvd-rom does not read discs and put in my burner but it would not work there was one port that i left unplugged because there was no plug for it i had the ribbon cable in and the power supply but there was one other plug that i did not have in my computer but i had it in my external dvd burner small plug a quarter the size of the power supply. so any suggestions how to get it operational i cant find that plug in the computer i looked for it but could not find it so i left it out and booted up the computer without it and the computer did not get past the compaq logo so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take the burner out of the external case. Look at the jumper. It's a rectangle that's usually black or blue and placed across some gold-plated pins on the back. It's probably set across the MAster pins. It should probably stay there. Just plug it into an IDE cable come off your motherboard. If there is another device on the same cable, set it's jumper to SLave (unless it's your main hard drive, then set that to MAster and the DVD burner to SLave. Better yet, if you have a "secondary" IDE port, set the DVD burner to MAster and plug it into that instead.

The power connector should be four pins, about an inch wide, and have slightly tapered edges inside the plastic either towards the top or bottom of the drive. This is to prevent you from putting the power connector in backwards.

Start her up and let me know how she runs.
