im new to afterdawn so im not completely sure this is the right forum, but anyway heres my question. ive recently made a backup of american beauty and tried to play it using the built-in DVD player in my toshiba television. after about a minute of trying to read it, it says to "check disc"...my copy plays in every other player ive tried, so i kno its not the dvd. im wondering if there is anything special i can do, or any specific software i can use that will create a copy playable in even my toshiba tv dvd player. i ask this because an identical backup of fight club plays every time. any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.
What? Why reburn if it plays in all his other DVD players...
That's simply wasting a disk...
Just try cleaning your laser in the DVD player concerned with a bit of alcohol on a cotton bud. Then if that doesn't do it, run one of those laser cleaning disks through it.
I am sure this is a laser problem, not a disk/burn problem.
are these the same disks that you burn to? are you using different media!? Some players have problems when you change medias. It plays for other players but your Toshiba TV spits it out. Does other disks play in the Toshiba? Are they the same brand of disk burned? If you are using different disks for burning and all of a sudden it won't play in the Toshiba then it's the compatibility of the disk with the Toshiba TV! Here is a few things to understand about compatibility:
there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:
1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php 4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!
follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.
Avoid the hard lens cleaning disc-it's a last resort. I can attest to them ruining drives. Try spraying compressed air into the drive when the tray is ejected.
Did you use the exact same blank dvd media/same spindle- for Fight club and american beauty?
That built-in player on your TV is a picky player. There's something about your backup that it doesn't like, but at least it recognizes some of your backups. These picky players can be sensitive to a slew of things:
Format of media
Media quality
Certain MID coded media
Burn engine
Burn speed-too fast, and even too slow.
Paper/sticker labels-major no-no
Compression
Old-out of date firmware on your DVD-RW drive.
Transfer programs- Transfering AVI to dvd, etc.
Buner quality
Those are just a few things that can make a picky stand alone player have issues with backups.
Please answer these questions:
1) What is the brand name and speed rate of your blank dash media-I believe you are using dash? Correct me if I'm wrong.
2) What's the MID codes of your media-in case you switched batches?
3) What's the brand name and model # of your DVD-RW drive?
4) What's the current firmware version on your burner?
5) How fast did you burn them?
6) What programs are you using for the dvd backup process and how you are doing it? Example: Rip with dvd shrink/anydvd running in background/autoburned with Nero 6.0.0.14.
7) Are you adding sticker labels?
Questions 1-4 can be found by using Nero infotool, dvd identifier, dvdinfopro, and some other programs. Here's a link to dvdidentifier- It's free:
