MKV files do not play properly.

Hi, not entirely sure this is in the right place, (how many times have you heard that before?) anyway forgive me if it is in the wrong place.
I am haveing trouble playing back this MKV movie file I got, it is dual audio and has subtitle tracks, the problem I have is I can switch audio fine but when I choose the subtitle track it says it should be working but I cannot see any subs on screen I am using VLC media player, I dont know if it is the player that does not support MKV fully, I was going to get a codec but I have no previous expiriecne with them and fear clashes.
So if someone could suggest to me a player that plays MKV files properly and is desigend for windows XP I would appreciate it.
But I would also prefer someone tell me how to get the subs to work, which I know how to turn on but I cannot see them on screen they do not show up, thanks.

If you have Nero, you can try playing it with Nero ShowTime. It dosen't seem to need any additional codecs for MKV files.

I do not have Nero anymore.
So that wont do, thanks though, any other way I can play this file???

You could try mplayer. Has ssa/ass support via libass now if your subtitles happen to be in that format.

This Mplayer thing is confusing I do not know how to get it to work, I press the Mplayer logo thing and a DOS window comes up then closes.

It is command line based although there is a native windows GUI version now that you could have downloaded. Also MPUI for an alternative GUI.
Basically you can just drag and drop an mkv and it should play though. Audio switching as I recall works for mkv's. Also you can set default languages in your config file and enable ssa/ass support if required.

This Mplayer thing got confusing, I got the file to show subs now by downloading Lazymans MKV and a Matroska pack. I can now play it using WMP and use the subs aswell.
WMP sucks by the way :)

You could always use MPC. It has a built in mkv splitter (can disable if you would rather use Haali's) and a built in subtitle renderer (could disable to use dvobsub, but then they are based on the same code anyway and MPC's looks nicer).
