i need to know if it will be able to write DVD +/- R's, and i will be using DVD decrypter

if just a dvd rom drive than no you can't write to dvd+/- disks but just read them

i have been able to rip movies for my video ipod, does that change anything?

yes i'm serious. you can rip with dvd rom drives but not burn with them. that is why they are called dvd rom drives & not dvd burners.

Or you could buy a DVD drive, rather than a HDD, which is cheaper...
