i'm thinking about getting a wireless adapter down the hall, in my room. How fast are download speeds compared to a wired connection?
i'm just putting it in because it is the only computer that has a dvd writer, so please be honest and tell me.

Well wireless can be as fast as you want it to be I do not think, if you have a good wireless router, it will make that much of a difference to be honest. Sometimes I have seen wireless be faster, in some case, than wired.

The answer, in a word, is latency:
Googlefoo for the win: (define: latency)

The speed difference is latency and sustained transfer rates. Because you'll rarely ever experience 54Mbit speeds downloading, you won't necessarily notice normal speed differences. However, it will make itself apparent when you move large files across your network, or if you do things like online gaming, where an additional 10-100ms of latency means the difference between life and death.
