I never can see where on the packaging it says MIJ ir anything like that. I just got some maxells and I couldn't find anything about the manufacturer ID. I ran them through DVD Identifier and they are 'CMC MAG'. Dammit. I buy from walmart usually, should I buy from somewhere else? Walmart doesn't sell Taiyo Yuden I don't think ; (

The only Maxells at Walmart that are MIJ are the "High Grade" Maxells that come in a 5 or 10 pack. At least thats all the MIJ Maxells ive come across.

DVDRyaN- You can look on or near the area of the barcode ( Proof of purchase ? ) and it should say made in taiwan or made in japan Made in japan is to be prefered ! If all they have is Made in taiwan then you may still be in luck ? Maxell did or maybe still does use Ritek to Mfr. some of their media ? Atleast they did for their 8X media . And Ritek although not in the same quality range as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim is Head & shoulders above CMC ! You can look at your Local wallyworld for the Maxell Printables these are usually in the smaller 25ct. tubs and are often the Made in japan ones but not always ! so be carefull ! I've found it advantageous to carry a small magnifying glass with me cause my arms ain't as long as they used to be ( OLD FART!!!LOL) and the made in japan /made in taiwan writing is awefully small! Hope this helps you out DVDRyaN good luck and happy Shopping !!!!

DVDRyaN- and on your should I buy from somewhere else ? I would say that's a personal choice ! If walmart has what you want at a price you like then shop there ! You can also shop or atleast check out sales @ BESTBUY , CIRCUITCITY , OFFICEDEPOT... ect . In addition you can often find good media at reasonable prices at Samsclubs or CostCo ect... or one of the online retailers Like Supermediastore.com,Meritline.com , or Rima.com all highly rated by fellow after dawn members ! Good luck & Buy Smart !

Maxell is phasing out production of DVD discs in its Japanese factories in order to shift to Blu-ray and other advanced optical products. Ritek will get the majority of OEM orders from Maxell, and CMC and Lead Data will pick up the remainder. If Maxell provides the stampers, there should be little difference since most drives recognize the Maxell MID codes and work well with them. If, however, the stampers are the ones provided by the manufacturers, there could be some problems with some drives. Ritek is well recognized, and HLDS (The Hitachi/Lucky Goldstar group that manufactures the GSA series of drives) will likely provide good firmware for Ritek/CMC/Lead Data MID codes.

Good to know - I've never had any problems with Maxells in Either the Japanese or The taiwan variety although all my Taiwan Maxells were oem'ed by ritek . Except one 25ct. pack of printables I bought last black friday By mistake CMC ( Pha- Tooey !!!!!!!!!!!!) I save those for experimental purposes eg: Where there is a chance of making a coaster instead of a good burn . If it works on the Crappo disc then I burn a Good disc ! Or I give them away to Fair weather friends ( The kind that always want favors from you but never return them!!! Make me a copy of such and such ( Sure -and I put it on CMC ) I'm evil I know LOL! The only thing with maxell /riteks is you can often get Ritek/ officedepot media at a cheaper price point ! But if the Price is RIGHT Then lets Make a Deal ! Come on Down LOL! Happy Shopping & Burning Y'all Ciao!
