I;ve been using Sony's scence they were $340.00 .The only problem I ever had was with the DRU-810a. It didn't read as well as my old DRU-710a's.
Why don't you guys like Sony's? The price is down and they run very well.

WHAT'S THE BEST DRIVE OUT THERE? Let me know?

Sony does not manufacture their burners . . most likely you'll be purchasing a rebadged LiteOn or BenQ . .

In my experience, the best burner for the best price is going to be a Benq (my favorite) or a LiteOn (a very good alternative)

If price is no object get a Plextor PX716a . . but they're 2-3 times the price of a LiteOn and not twice as good

Can never go wrong with a Ben-Q

I got a BenQ 1655 and it has worked flawlessly, no problems what so ever since I got it a year ago. I have about 3000+ burns on it too.

I was gonna buy a Plextor but the store was out so I just got the BenQ.

It's a shame you can't buy BenQs anymore.
You want to look out for any of these:
NEC
LiteOn
LG
Plextor

Best that I've used:

Benq 1640- $35
Benq 1650-$60 when they first came out
Benq 1620- $40

Good luck finding the 1640 and the 1650. Ebay has a ton of the 1620's.

I just installed the supposedly cadillac of all dvd drives,Plextor 716A. Very expensive, but I found a good deal on a used one.

Benqs are getting scarce. That's the reason I found the Plextor.

Junk drives:
Khypermedia +8x
I/O Magic 16x Empa drive
HP 640c L/S

Lite-on,NEC,Pioneer,LG are all quality drives. I'm not sure what the best model #'s are for them, but they are some great drives.

HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!
