High Guys, just thought I would share my brief experience with the Sony drive with you.

I bought the Sony DW-U10A from Novatech for £151.57 inc vat. I also ordered 10 red Datawrite 4xDVD-Rs to get me started. These were delivered 2 days later no problems. This a bare drive - no cable or mounting bits etc, but it did come with Pinnacle instant cd/dvd se.

Between ordering the drive and it being delivered I realised that I could make it external. Looking around the web I found a firewire case from Megadata for only £39 inc vat and delivery and firewire cable! The site is here:-

I thought I would take a chance and give it a go so I ordered it.

The sony arrived and my impatience got the better of me. I whipped off the cover of my ageing Dell Dimension (866 MHz PIII 512 MB, XP Home) and attached the drive to a channel of my ata133 pci card to which I have attached a 7200 rpb hard drive which I use for video editing. I installed the Pinnacle software for curiousity. I usually use Nero for my CD burning. The drive worked great as a CD writer but I could not get it to be recognised as a DVD writer. I then removed my other internal CD writer and DVD-Rom drive and attached the sony to the vacated ide channel. The sony now appeared to work fine - I copied a large directory using multisession mode in Nero no problem. The copy appeared to be only 2x speed whereas Nero reported 4x. I understand that may be a problem with the Datawrite discs so I won't dwell on that until I have checked with other types of media. I was happy the sony was working so I returned the old drives to the Dell expecting a long wait for the external case to arrive.

The Firewire case arrived next day via city link. I opened the box and all looked lovely. It took me 10 minutes to install the sony and soon had it attached to the Dell. It was instantly recongnised and started burning some data DVDs. I was now using disc at once mode but this time the writing failed at the end of the burn! After 5 coasters (Yes I know I'm stubborn!) I realised that I need not write to get the same error I just needed to simulate - my wallet breathed a sigh of relief! I thought that I would see if I could update the firmware. I converted the drive to a DRU-500A much to my surprise as I thought I would have problems over the Firewire connection. I then istalled the latest Firmware (2.0f). I still got the error. I updated the ASPI drivers. I still got the error. I tried Sonic foundry DVD Architect to burn some video files with no problem. I had a hunch that it was the Pinnacle software causing problems as it installs a packet writing application. I tend not to get on with these and have removed InCD ages ago so I uninstalled the Pinnacle software. This time everything worked excellently - problem solved. I tried the drive on my laptop, also with no problems.

I now have an external writer for less than £200! I still have to convince myself that I can write at 4x but I have to wait for delivery of new media for that.

I hope these whitterings help someone out.

Best whishes
