DomHo- Tdk quality depends on who actually made the disc ? I am almost finished with a 100ct. spindle of TDK DVD+R 4x media which was actually made by RicohJpn for Tdk - and I have found it excellent - no coasters no visible errors ect... Tdk plays the musical chairs game when it comes to Who manufactures their disc - It could be Tdk , Moser baer (India ) Cmc ( Yuck - Taiwan ) you never no one spindle to the next - Not a good Idea - I haven't used Ridata Disk -But have used Ritek Media sold under the Maxell Name & also sold by Officedepot under their name and found it very good quality No not taiyo Yuden or verbatim quality but very good none the less and often at a better price ! If you can find them I would get Taiyo Yuden either online or sold under Sony & Fuji brands ( MIJ - The made in Japan disc only ) or Maxells ( MIJ if you can get them ) Verbatims right there with Taiyo In Quality ! , Then maybe some Riteks or RicohJpns if the price is right OFFICEDEPOT sales ect. Hope this helps

CMC MAGs are crap! don't worry about the package being open..... take it back and get the MIJ disks! here is a media guide:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
I don't agree with the listing of TDK..... I think they are second or third rate at best! follow the MIJ rule or buy Verbatim, they are top notch and the only made in Taiwan disks I'll buy!

ok..... don't make such a big deal about being a Newbie..... we all were at one time or other and we came to this site to learn..... so here is some Newbie advise and also the answer to your +Rs vs -Rs media:
1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

why the +R media is better than the -R media

Definitely the made in japan sony are very good. Look for the white/octagon foam spacer on the top of the spindle-they will yield the taiyo yuden. Same applies to fuji and maxell.
Even the taiwanese sony 1x-8x and 1x-16x is pretty decent.
TDK? I'm very skeptical with them. I've never seen the MIJ spindles. The few spindles I bought, were cmags, UGGH! I will ignore them from now on.

It depends on what equipment you have.It all comes down to compatability-whatever format your burner and all your stand alone players will accept.
Best: If you got a booktyping capable drive like Benq,plextor,lite-on,LG- Definitely the plus format booktyped to dvd-rom would yield the highest stand alone player compatability.
If not capable of booktyping- Dash would yield the next highest rate.
Plus format would be the lowest compatable of the dvd formats.
You'll probably have to try both formats to find the correct format that suits all your dvd drives.Make sure it is quality stuff. If you happen to get a no disc/dirty disc/wrong region/wrong format type of error: Gotta try the opposite format.

thread title renamed to be more meaningful.
that's why i won't buy TDK, it's a lottery as to which manufacturers' discs you end up, you'll never tell from just looking at the package/tub

TY, Verbatim, Ritek (Ridata as well), Ricoh (includes Arita brand by Ritek) and Sony or Fuji made in Japan only (TY). These are the brands I use with flawless results.

Hi bigtoxy69,
I have never tried the MIJ Maxell's as I have had great success with all the other media I mentioned and usually always buy on sale. I will be on the lookout for a sale on these MIJ Maxell's and give them a whirl. Way back in the beginning I have tried lots of media of all names, some with terrible results. Way in the beginning the ripping programs and my first burner (Phillips +RW only = LOL), probably played a part as well. Now with the good media I mentioned above, my current NEC burner and using Shrink w/IMG auto burn (DVDFab Decrypter first on some newer ones) my burns are flawless.

oneacer-Yeah I think you'll like them ( MIJ Maxell's) Never had a problem with the Taiwan made Maxells but They were Riteks under the Maxell name ! So they were not too shabby ! I think we all have burned a coaster here & there or used some media that was'nt very good ! You have to start somewhere with something ,that's how you learn ! The trick in learning is to learn the right way early & not keep making the same mistakes ! If I would've know about Afterdawn.Com sooner I could have saved myself lots of wasted time , Money & aggravation!!!!!!!!!!!! I do now so I can laern from other members & help out where I can ! You may want to check out officedepot ? They often have the MIJ maxells in the Printables (Might not be on sale thought ) I found mine At wallyworld locally -regular Maxells ( MIJ 50pks. ) It pays to look around ! anyways Good luck & happy burning !
