DVDs will be around for quite some time still. It was only 2 to 3 years ago that VHS was completely phased out, and there is no way that the public will adopt a new format so quickly after dumping their VHS players for DVD players.
what you all said & also I don't think they'll dump The Current DVD formats - DVD+R & RW , DVD-R & RW & both DL formats just yet for a several reasons- 1. is that although their profit margin has dropped on Single Layer dvd media ( OfficeDepot brand disc for 19 cents & Sony/Taiyo's or Verbatims for .25to .30 cents onsale !) THey are still making a hefty profit on Double layer media ,particularly since DVD-R DL has'nt really taken off yet and DVD+R DLis selling well even at very high ( Compared to Current SL media )prices. 2. Another reason IMHO that the current formats will be with us for some time is the HD/Blu-Ray gear is still in the lets make our development cost back phase ! ( Stick it to the Early adopters!) New gear be it Computer related or Consumer electronics is always overpriced, underfeatured & still buggy when first released - Then the Mfr.'s iron out the kinks recoup their investment & the price drops ! this all does'nt happen overnight but the speed of throughput from being the first on the block to own one to having that gear become ubiquitous is increasing rapidly ! 3. Many people will not want to buy into a format that is crippled from day 1 no matter how Great or Cool it's supposed to be ( Remember the whole DAT Tape Debacle - The RIAA et al the record companies were so afraid that consumers were going to buy a DAT deck for several hundred dollars and then spend $20-something dollars for the tape to Back up ( Copy / Bootleg in their eyes ) a CD that you could buy for $10 to $15 dollars ! Actually their biggest fear was that being digital you could make perfect copies of that copy/tape ! That they bullied the Mfr.'s into installing SCSM chips) Copy Protection into all consumer grade dat decks ( You can make as many single generation dat copies of your CD or Precorded Dat tape ( DIGITAL to DIGITAL) but you can't make copies of that copy /Tape atleast not remaining in the digital to digital world the Copy Protection kicks in and the deck locks up !You could make another copy through the decks Analog inputs but at the added expense of additional noise! Pro-Quality /Prosumer Dat decks either did'nt have the copy chip or it could be switched off But were extremely expensive ! Needless to say After having it's technology crippled and it's introduction to the U.S. market delayed. DAT has'nt died yet But it's not feeling well at all ( Relegated to Live recording & Some recording studios ) in essence a niche market! MiniDisc ( Remember MD) The Cassette killer! It to is addled by the copy chip blues ! and Being Sony's baby had some market Penetration ! but I think fearing the Whole Dat Nightmare ! would return to haunt them perhaps Sony really did'nt promote It (MD) at first at least here in america ! It was /is a good Idea ( No tape to stretch ,minimum wow & flutter , random access, Digital ect... It seemed like The Analog Cassette was going to die a tragic but noble death ! NOT!! People like cassette's - They're small , inexpensive & have reasonable Fidelity ! , & you can rec0rd your own ! Decks are affordable !ect... What limited MD 's appeal was by the time sony deciced to promote it the Cost of CDR media & burners had dropped to the point where they eclipsed them ! .25 cents or less for a CDR disc vs. almost $2.00 ea for Md Media You Get the picture ! Sorry to wander off topic slightly but I was merely trying to express an Opinion that For Myself atleast ( HD /Blu-Ray ) sre not in the Future ! " The moving finger writes & having written moves on " ! Happy Burning & Smart Shopping everyone ! CIAO!
daman1" Rumors of my death are somewhat Premature !!!" I forget what famous person said that quote but tis' true ! You are right Vhs are still available but it's not really the number 1 choice anymore ! Even on sale the price per Tape is like $1.00 ea. Vs. .25 to 30 cents for Dvd media and you can record 6 hrs. on a dvd just like Vhs given the right recorder ! DVD media isn't prone to tape stretch or getting eaten by the machine like vhs . You laready know that my friend being a afterdawn.com member ! I am not downing tape - I was an audiophile/Tapehead long before I became a Computer/vidiot ! But if I am to be honest I would admit to replacing most of my tape based activities - video & audio with Disc based formats - MD & CDR replaced My Cassettes & vinyl ! & Video CD & DVDR Media Replaced my Vhs Machines & tape- The only tape based example was my 2 Big Honkin' Super VHS sony machines (SAME MODEL) that repalced my aged sony Reel to reel ! & my Emerson & sharp Vhs machines ! & although I have an extensive & Eclectic collection of Vinyl Records I admit to not playing a record in years ! Vhs machines atleast inexpensive ones have become disposible technology - They break or wear out it's cheaper to buy a new one than too fix the old one !I still occasionally use my Vhs machine if I find a good movie on Vhs @ Big lots stores cheap I buy it Dub it to DVD or Video CD and give the original tape to my brother in-law ! Vhs will be around for awhile just as DVD& CDR will be around for the People who are'nt tech savy & just want to record their soaps or the big game or whatever ! But it will not be the most likely choice for those who are in the Know ! Good day & Happy Burning !
